Q: Is that a hardware button on the right (the oval) used for starting a scan, or do all scans have to start from the software?

The " up front" staff reply with --"we use the mouse and screen to start the scan into the EHR" ;If software that you're using doesn't override it, then pushing that button might start the scan but I'm not sure..

Q: Can this be used to scan business cards?

Yes, but I don’t believe it has text recognition to add as a contact. It can also scan laminated or plastic cards. We have been using this brand for at least 5 years and have been very happy.

Q: Does it come with it's own software?

No but you can use the built-in scan software on your PC. Windows 7 /Windows 10.
