Gerry [DVD]

A 98 minute film could have been over in about 18 minutes
Horrible, most of all because the director chose to spend several minutes at a time on the same repetetive scene (e.g. driving to the hike site, walking side-by-side through the desert, collapsed on the salt flats)!!! It was enough to make you want to hit the fast forward button just to get on with the film. What were they thinking?!!!I only watched to the end to see if the dumb, dull and totally unlikable twits survived or not! :o(

Hypnotic
I get why some people don't like this - but let me tell you about the film from my point of view:QUICK REVIEW:Beautifully shot, uses landscape and nature to hypnotise you into watching the whole film. My eyes were glued to it the whole time and I couldn't blink. Not much dialogue between the characters. Keep in mind that BOTH characters are called Gerry - the whole film may not be about the struggle for water and the exhaustion these characters face, but the mental struggle and the battle between two sides of "Gerry". Hypnotic, beautiful, ambiguous and original.LONG REVIEW:This film is shot beautifully, the cinematography, lighting and use of environment is amazing, even using long takes where the sun goes down while both characters walk, slowly changing the shot over time. There are lots of long takes in this movie, ranging from 2-6 minutes. This - imo - helps you understand the amount of time these two buddies are spending wandering and either makes you exhausted watching it - similar to how the characters feel walking - or hypnotises you and keeps you watching. This is what it did for me anyway, my eyes were glued to the screen the whole movie, sometimes I even forgot to blink and found my eyes growing red and aching. It's an art film, lets face it, the movie is mostly silent and an admiration of the landscapes, using long takes and wide views and beautiful cinematography. It's like an exhibition in a movie. We understand the two characters' struggle as they walk for days and days. It's all so amazing and hypnotising - but could be boring for others. I was invested throughout. While your watching, remember that both characters are called Gerry. I found this out after watching the film as the film doesn't really communicate this to you well. This film could also be about a mental struggle and fight between two sides of "Gerry", thus making it more interesting to watch. The ending is straightforward and I won't spoil it, but its meaning is up to interpretation...

one star for the scenery and music
One reviewer here describes this film as a masterclass in direction. What was he on at the time? I personally think it's a really bad film. It's pretentious and tries to be "arty" without succeeding. Add to this a weak plot and the boredom factor of two inarticulate idiots trying to navigate themselves out of a hostile landscape. It's a bit like watching paint dry. The only decent thing about the film is the photography and music.I usually enjoy survival films but not this one. Compared to Nicholas Roeg's "Walkabout" (5 stars) this hardly merits a one star. A complete waste of time!

Avoid! I wish I could give a Zero rating
This is the most boring film I ever seen. I'm ashamed of myself for watching it all the way through in the forlorn hope that something - ANYTHING - would happen. Its composed mainly of long shots and i mean looooooonnnnnggggggg shots: !0 minutes (real time) of a 360 pan of a guys head against depressingly dull scenery. I mean we get the idea - its crap to be lost in a desert- but come on! Give us some dialogue, a back story, a reason to keep watching......a reason to keep paying for prime. Utter pretentious, condescending shite. You'll never get the time back you spend watching this drivel so don't.

Utterly Captivating
Gerry is a film about two guys who go for a hike in the desert without any food or water & inevitably get lost. For 99.9% of the time, the only people onscreen are the two Gerrys. There's little or no dialogue but this works. Instead, it focuses on the scenery, which is utterly breathtaking & the sounds around. One scene where the boys are walking & all you can hear is their breathing & the crunch of the ground under their feet completely captivated me. Yes, sometimes the scenes are a bit drawn out but as the film went on I found myself watching these with bated breath to see what would happen. In a way, it's a bit like tense thriller as you know it's building up to something but you don't know when or how.The only reason for four not five stars was the ending, which I felt let the film down a bit. Give it a chance. I was tempted to fast forward a few times but I stuck with it & I came away completely mesmerised with it. I only wish I'd had the chance to see it on the big screen.

Another crazy and in a way funny film from Van Sant
van Sant is definitely an unstoppable experimentalist. And he still is, since even his most classic film are to be regarded as pieces of a unceaseable research through potential of cinema and hiw an author like him can adopt all kinds of known and unknown devices, tools, variety of languages, styles, etc...and refresh them through his personal touch and contribute. This film belongs to that middle land between his underground style (a whole long walk and talk between two friends who get lost in the american desert, with no music and just ambiental sounds and the actors words) and mainstream (it is one of his first films with young hollywood actors). What comes out is unique film, that is so extreme, although very simple, that results in a hypnotic and magnetic "non-story", where you end uo drawned in like a weird dream. i must say I found it funny, appealing and stimulating. It is all atmosphere. A, strangely enough, lighthearted atmosphere
