Do you cut the rod to the exact length or leave a little wiggle room for installation? My tub measures 58 3/4 inches.

If 58 3/4 is the actual measurement wall to wall, subtract about 1/8" from that measurement for the cut.

What is the diameter of the rod to know what kind of pipe cutter I should have or would a hacksaw do the trick?

The rod diameter is 1", and the circumference is about 3-1/8". Best tool to cut this rod is a copper tubing/ pipe cutter. Any wood cutting saw will work with aluminium too.
