Great features, some annoying zipper issues over time
I bought this backpack in December 2014, as a replacement for a Targus pack that after about three years had started to fall apart (with admittedly heavy use). I was immediately impressed with the Thule's superior workmanship, stitching, fabric, durability. I really liked the hard exterior case for glasses and other small items, but overall it suited me perfectly for carrying a 15" MacBook Pro in the well-padded laptop slot and assorted books in the main compartment for commuting, or stuffing clothing into the main compartment when traveling. Handy outside pocket also for pens etc; also some inside zipper pockets for small things. Very good design. It has plenty of capacity, but is not a huge pack. Very light when not loaded. The zipper issues: eventually, all the blue plastic zipper pulls pulled off or broke off, leaving only the tiny metal tabs that cannot be grabbed with fingers. I solved the problem by threading key rings through the holes in the metal tabs. Also, the zippers themselves began to get "sticky" and hard to operate. This was after a few years of use, but it was disappointing.Anyway, last week I was teaching students in Denver and I foolishly placed the backpack on the sidewalk at Union Station, then forgot and walked away. Remembered it 5 minutes later but by then it had been stolen. I thought about replacing it with another similar Thule, but I had bought this backpack in 2014 for less than $80.00, and the current version is about $100.00 more than that. Considering the zipper issues, I have decided to switch to another brand.

MY GOSH. This bag is just perfect
So. when I first took this bag outta the box, I had quite a big shock. The bag was flat as hell, and looked NOTHING like 32 litres. Picking it up, it was quite a surprise how incredibly light it was.Fast forward, this monster can fit a WHOLE LOT of stuff.1) Right at the back is the laptop compartment. In this compartment there a sleeve/section specifically for a laptop. I have a 15.4" MBP, and that thing fits in absolutely perfectly and snugly. It's briliiant. There's also some padding at the bottom where the laptop would otherwise meet the ground. I like that. apart from there, theres also a small sleeve area that fits a iPad perfectly and snugly. so if you're one of those who lug around a laptop and an ipad, this is just perfect. apart from that, this compartment would probably fit 1 other textbook or thin folder. There are also these 2 pockets near the top of this compartment. Incredibly handy for keeping small stuff. I use it to keep my earphone case, some pens, and my credit card holder.2) The main compartment: This is the monster. I generally keep 1 hugeass binder, 1 folder, 1 lab book and 1 textbook and 1 fat nalgene bottle (laid horizontally on top). I love how spacious this monster is. There are also 2 mesh pockets near the top, which I use to keep my magic mouse, a mini-display adaptor, a portable iphone charger and some cables.3) The safezone: i just bloody love this thing. I use it to keep all my non-so-tough electronics. I am usually able to put in my Canon S100 (which is inside a caselogic camera case so it's quite bulky), and sometimes a earphone. Don't expect it to be SPACIOUS enough to stuff tonnes of things. It's really meant for those couple of small stuff that are just fragile. Sunglasses, watches, camera, earphones etc.4) There's this shove-it compartment below the safezone. I love that spot. It's great for you to, well, shove any random things into it, esp if you need very ready access to them. The space can also be expanded by loosening the 2 buckles at the sides. for day-to-day I just shove my umbrella and lunch box there although if you want, you can loosen the buckles fully, and you can easily shove a pair of running shoes in there. The ONLY problem is, anything put there is vulnerable to the rain cos well, its not covered. Additionally, if you carry this bag out in the rain, water is gonna collect inside this compartment. It baffles me how they did not put like some kinda drainage holes at the bottom. Oh well.5) The front compartment: This is a nice roomy compartment good for shoving anything small and needs ready access. I usually put my mac charger, my graphics calculator, my pencil case and my spare sunglasses (in a case) in this compartment.6) There are 2 side pockets for you to put your water bottles and what not. One thing that might be a little annoying is that if you stuff the main compartment to the brim, it kinda obstructs any attempts to shove a bottle or stuff like that into the side compartment.7) The bottom compartment: so below the front compartment is this other compartment that literally lines the bottom of your bag. It's supposed to be for the MBP charger. I personally find it an awkward place (it's kinda tight and it's hard to push the charger in sometimes) and It makes your bag sit weirdly on the ground unless you managed to get it perfectly fitted in.Overall, this bag is preeeeetty much close to perfect. It's got MONSTER volume for keeping just about everything. The construction is BLOODY solid - the buckles and zippers are some kinda metal (i think its aluminum), the fabric is solid and durable and there's double stitching at most places. I also think the designers at Thule are absolutely brilliant. The compartments are actually incredibly practical and useful. Plus I think it looks pretty damn good. I'm NOT sure if it's suitable for people who are slightly smaller in build though. It could be a little too big for their frames.

Perfect fit for my life
I've been using this daily or near-daily for six weeks now so I believe I can give it a fair review.I spent a long time looking for an upgrade on my daily bag (an old work Osprey my wife passed on to me when she got an new one). I was looking at things like Timbuck2, Mancro, and another Osprey when I saw this on a Black Friday deal. I had some Thule accessories for a car that were great -- I had no idea they made backpacks but after looking over the pictures I took a chance on it and I'm glad I did. When I'm out for the day I do two things: work and hit the gym. Half the time I take Chicago's elevated to where I'm going, other times I walk. This bag is the perfect companion for that lifestyle.I can securely carry my 15 inch laptop (it's one of those thick gaming ones), my 12.5" x 9.5" folio, and a lot of times a tablet or a couple books in the padded "business" partition. The larger partition will hold my workout clothes and change of underwear, swimming suit, flip flops for the shower, and athletic shoes. If for some reason I need to tote more stuff I can put my shoes in the external exposed carrier (which seems designed for a bike helmet ). The little outer pocket holds my albuterol rescue inhaler, a few toiletries, hairbrush, pens, flashlight, pocket knife, the usual everyday carry stuff. The side water bottle pockets have well-designed gussets that work equally well with a straight up and down bottle (the widest I've used is a 3" diameter blender bottle) or a tapered coffee travel mug type. The hard external lockable case is big enough both sunglasses and reading glasses plus your phone. There is a divider partition in it.There's a little mini-handle at the back bottom where you could hang/clasp a safety light for nighttime biking or running.I particularly like the little storage pockets in the big partition up at the top. I keep a couple nutrition bars and some sanitizer there usually, but a small first-aid kid or a couple tins of Altoids could go there as well. There are also top pockets in the laptop side. They fit a small notebook or 3x5 index cards easily enough. The only feature that's a bit of a mystery is the zippered external pouch at the bottom. It's not big enough for much more than storing a pair of socks. But again, good place for something you maybe won't need quite so often like a leatherman, small first aid kit, small bike tire puncture repair kit, something like that.Zippers, handles and chest clasp and whatnot are top-notch.I've seen a few complaints about the stiffness of the straps and backplate. I've run with this backpack on and loaded and the stiffness isn't a problem, if anything it helps let the bag take the weight rather than your back and shoulders. My only suggestion for improvement would be a D-ring on the front straps. There are little plastic cross straps that you could use on a safety light clip or something. It's been through rain and snow and crowded rush-hour travel and still looks brand new. The fabric pattern hides a bit of dirt well. Very happy with this.
