Made In Japan is one of the most exciting live albums ever recorded. Featuring rare archive performances of the classic line up of Deep Purple live in concert, this is the ultimate review of a landmark in rock history. Also featured are rare archive interviews with the band themselves including the views of the man in black himself, Ritchie Blackmore, and solo performances of material from the album by Ian Gillan. Features Highway Star, Child In Time, The Mule, Space Truckin', Black Knight, When A Blind Man Cries, Woman from Tokyo, Lazy, Speed King, Hush and Mandrake Root.

I had a feeling that this box set/Blue Ray would have it's detractors and sure enough. At the same time, I thought a lot more people by now would have been putting glowing reviews on here as to what an incredible box set this is - which it is! Now this album I know inside out and back to front because this is what turned me on to rock music at the tender age of 10 years old so when I saw that this was getting the super deluxe box set, Blue Ray, vinyl, 2CD, single CD re-issue treatment, I had mixed feelings in that this is the ultimate live album to celebrate this way but could also turn out to be a complete let down when messing with the mix of an album we know and love so dearly. The good news is I firmly believe the greatest live album ever sounds even better than it did before. The detail, and more importantly, the balance of all the instruments and Ian Gillan's voice is absolutely spot on. You can now hear the incredible set that Purple were playing then exactly as you would have heard it if you were fortunate to have been at either Osaka or Tokyo way back then. And ok, you may argue why does anyone need three sets with exactly the same set list in one box set but I honestly believe that the variations on each night do make it worth having all three sets. You can decide if the original album had the best takes of each song for yourself - I, incedentally, think that Space Truckin' from the first show at Osaka is better than the second night's performance they actually put on the album (after that rendition on the first night, it was a wonder that the venue was still standing for the second night!).As for the way this has all been presented - well, it is an absolute dream. A beautiful quality box with the iconic artwork and colours of the original album cover, a seven inch single in picture sleeve (vinyl was never this thick back then!), a replica of the Japanese tour programme of the time, a family tree and a fantastic 12" x 12" hardback book to house the four CDs and the DVD. What's not to like!If you are 'umming and aghhing' as to whether you need another copy of Made In Japan and whether you can justify sixty five quid on such extravagent box sets, well my advice would be go for it. You will not be disappointed and let's be clear here - this is an essential document of a band at the peak of their powers and the standard of musicianship is jaw-dropping. It now sounds even more spectacular.

Took delivery of this on Tuesday. After spending the best part of £80 was wondering if it was money well spent. Having got the original vinyl copy/1st issue cd/remastered double album/21st anniversary triple cd. How many copies do you need.We all know the tracks and all know the importance of their release and the absolute jaw dropping efficiency of Deep Purple on those 3 nights. Strange Kind Of Woman from the 3rd night is worth the £80 quid alone. The mix on these is absolutely stunning. I've been comparing all 3 cd versions over the past 2 days. Played through a Quad system. The first thing is the separation of all instruments . Yes having Blackmore on the right and Lord on the left as the audience hears it is a must. What really stands out is the phenomenal work of Paice and Glover. The kick drum from Paice bass runs from Glover are right up there in the mix yet do no detract from Blackmore and Lords performance. Gillian is on fire and is really well placed. You can even hear him running aroundThe bongos on space trucking and lazy are in there too. Each scratch of Blackmores pick as he runs it down those strings is there. It's a fantastic tribute to them as musicians at their peak live. What let's th whole thing down is the book it could have been so much better 60 odd pages of quotes and reused photos what we're they thinking. The DVD is great even though the bulk of it has since been shown on BBC 4. The box and other bits are nice additions. But this is all about the music 42 years on I was 6 when this came out and have listened to it since the age of 13. I've never heard a better live album. Even Ritchie messing up Smoke On The Water (twice) cannot detract from the sheer force of this band.Again the mix is incredible. If you close you eyes you can almost transport yourself there. £80 well spent. If you can't afford it just buy the standard version. History in the making.

Best edition
Purple's big live album which involve the great excesses of Lord/Blackmore and Gillians amazing vocal. Somthing you miss in Deep Purple today. But one must take into consideration (no matter how many mastertapes you got) that it's not possible to compare the sound quality on a live recording from 1972 with a recording from 2000. This blu-ray is the best attempt so far with a major upgrade of the sound. You will not automatically get a better sound with 5.1,the HD-Master stereo is great. Be happy, because we blu-ray fanatics possibly are a dying breed

Arrived early and in good shape!
Well, Japanese Packaging and Design better than original USA designs, and with lyrics (which was an unexpected surprise). And there were review (??) by either attendees or critics, sorry I can't read katakana, included too. For the discerning fan and collector, this would be a valuable condition to their collections. If there was a greater than five star review, I would bequeath it!
