Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee: Smooth, Ethical, and the Best Instant Brew Around
Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee (3.53 oz Jar): Smooth, Rich, and a Game-Changer for Instant CoffeeI recently tried the Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee (3.53 oz jar, medium roast) for my morning brew and camping trips, and it’s hands-down the best instant coffee I’ve ever tasted. Sourced from organic, Fairtrade Arabica beans grown in the highlands of Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, this coffee delivers a premium experience that rivals freshly brewed coffee, all with the convenience of instant preparation.Ease of Use: 5/5Preparing a cup is effortless. I used 1–2 teaspoons per 8-ounce cup, added hot water, and stirred—it dissolves instantly with no grainy residue, unlike cheaper instant brands. It also mixes beautifully in cold water or milk for iced coffee, which was a pleasant surprise for quick summer drinks. The 3.53 oz jar yields about 50 cups, and the recyclable glass packaging is compact, making it ideal for travel or small kitchens. A Reddit user noted, “It’s perfect for camping—just pour into boiled water and stir,” and I found it a lifesaver on a recent backpacking trip.Flavor and Aroma: 4.5/5The flavor is rich, smooth, and full-bodied, with a mild bitterness and subtle notes of blackberry, as Wirecutter tasters described. It’s not as nuanced as a pour-over, but for instant coffee, it’s remarkably close to diner-quality brew. The freeze-drying process retains the Arabica beans’ natural aromas, giving it a fresh, roasted scent that’s far from the typical “instant” taste. One Amazon reviewer called it “divine,” and I agree—it’s smooth enough to drink black, though I enjoy it with a splash of oat milk. My only minor critique is that using the recommended 1 teaspoon can taste weak for stronger coffee lovers; I prefer a heaping teaspoon or two for a bolder kick, as a Reddit user also found.Quality and Sustainability: 5/5Mount Hagen’s commitment to organic, Fairtrade practices shines through. The coffee is made from 100% USDA Organic Arabica beans, free of pesticides, herbicides, or artificial additives, sourced from small-scale farmers in Papua New Guinea. The Fairtrade certification ensures fair wages and sustainable farming, which aligns with my values, as one Amazon reviewer noted: “I’d rather pay for this than Nestle.” The coffee is gentle on sensitive stomachs, with no issues for me, unlike brewed coffee, which a user with stomach sensitivities also praised. The eco-friendly glass jar and resealable pouches (available in other formats) add to its sustainability appeal.Versatility: 4.5/5This coffee is incredibly versatile—perfect for home, office, camping, or travel. I’ve used it for hot coffee, iced lattes, and even sprinkled it into recipes for a coffee crunch, as Vitacost suggests. The single-serve sticks (sold separately) are great for on-the-go, though I stuck with the jar for home use. It’s ideal for campers or students, as noted by Vitacost, and its mild flavor suits a range of preferences. The only limitation is that dark roast lovers might find the medium roast too mild, but a decaf option is available for those avoiding caffeine.Value for Money: 4.5/5Priced around $10–$12 for a 3.53 oz jar (roughly 28¢ per serving), Mount Hagen is pricier than Folgers but far cheaper than Starbucks Via, offering better flavor and ethics. With a 4.7-star average on Amazon, reviewers call it “the best instant coffee” for its taste and value. A Reddit user pointed out it’s more cost-effective than local roaster beans, yielding twice as many cups per dollar. The only downside is availability—harder to find at big chains like Kroger, but Whole Foods and Amazon stock it reliably.Final Verdict: Mount Hagen Organic Freeze Dried Instant Coffee is a standout for its rich, smooth flavor, eco-friendly ethos, and unmatched convenience. Whether you’re at home, camping, or traveling, it delivers a near-fresh-brewed experience without the hassle of equipment. The mild medium roast may not satisfy dark roast fans, and stronger brews require extra granules, but these are minor drawbacks. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking a premium instant coffee that’s kind to both your taste buds and the planet.

I like that it's organic and tastes smooth
I like the taste of the Mount Hagen coffee and that it's an organic fair-trade coffee. I needed an instant coffee that is smooth and perfect for the summertime. I prefer drinking cold coffee in the summer and this coffee tastes good as a frappee.

My Everyday coffee
Drin it everyday and I'm a coffee snob. I used to French Press or use a pour over. It's just so easy - can't beat it. My parents used to drink Sanka so at first I was like - no way! But honestly try it! Just as good as a brewed cup. Clean, no after taste. I use the travel packs also.

Excellent, very happy with this instant coffee
I had to give up coffee years ago. I know: bummer! However, that habit was half a cup of beans = one full carafe a day, so a little instant does no harm.. My official excuse is that just a little bit of instant coffee adds flavor to chocolate desserts (so true: I’ve been adding to chocolate mousse since the 1970’s!!!!), and perhaps a little slips in to my hot chocolate on those “10 Below” Winter nights when I really want a cup of something warm and hot. But sometimes it’s just a morning or evening when I really crave a cup of coffee, and I find the quality of this instant to be excellent! I’m old enough to remember instant coffee in college more than 50 years ago—gag—, and this is a far cry. A teaspoon and a half, plus perhaps a half teaspoon of hot chocolate powder, and I’m a happy girl. Ancient happy girl.

AI Recommended
Believe it or not, this coffee was recommended by AI for me.I typed in my coffee preferences for an "instant" coffee (not bitter, strong flavor, good with a little cream, etc), and this was one of the two instant-type coffees it recommended to me.I find the cost to be a little high for a freeze-dried coffee, but I was happy to give it a go, and see what happened. The flavor was definitely a good "fit" based on my request.Still prefer to ask a human, though.

Rich cup of coffee by itself or enhance a medium roast K-Kip to a richer fuller cup of Java☕️
I add about 3/4 of a teaspoon to my 8 ouncek-cup. It is just enough to give a med roast cup of coffee☕️ a smooth rounded flavor. We always order three at a time…I number the jars 1, 2, & 3, so by the time I get to jar number three I know it’s time to re-order!When shipped they come very well protected in bubble wrap so there’s no damage to the glass jars. I do appreciate this extra step. I also reuse the bubble wrap or recycle properly.👍

Way Better Than Starbucks
This stuff tastes how coffee ought to always taste, and it provides that caffeine boost you're looking for. I pass these out to be my family; its so good, they started purchasing it on their own. It's also so easy to fix up a cuppa; just follow the instructions on the jar to put in just the right amounts.
