Good quality photo and video, with bad ergonomics
I purchased a used good condition A6300 in Jan this year, and firstly I will say that unless you need the flip up LCD and AF improvements on the A6400 - this represents far far better value for a buyer used v a new A6400.That said I found mixed feelings with this camera. On the positive side image quality is as expected mostly excellent, good dynamic range and low light. Build is fine with mag alloy panels top, back and front. Video is excellent it is here I would recommend the camera for someone who needs an affordable video machine with the option to adapt many lenses and plenty of native ones. Yet as a system E mount is neglected in terms of APS-C , with little effort into product variations. This is where the Sony falls down. In short the camera works well on a tripod or gimbal. When you use and hold the camera, the problems become quite apparent. It is a not a comfortable camera to hold, the grip is too wide and not deep enough - result your fingers are cramped and crushed up. This is known as the "finger pincher" in Sony circles, it's scary nobody noticed how poorly designed the body is. The hard edges on the body are not very ergonomic and can show marks/wear quickly (my sample is good as I have taken care of it, many show a lot of damage over time)Most of the controls are crammed onto the back panel with little room for error. You do over time get used to it, but it is never an enjoyable experience. The lack of AF joystick is also a problem.Focus peaking is surprisingly poor, even at the lowest setting it is far too strong and near unusable, it works better zoomed in, though I mostly turn it off. This is the exact reverse of the A Mount bodies I have there the peaking is far more restrained and actually useful. On high on the SLT's it's far lower than low on the A6300.Yet there are positives this is a better buy than the A6000, it features improved video, OK ish battery life (not for 4k that eats batteries) a microphone port, better build, a much better EVF (the A6000 is poor here) and a silent shutter. Yes not ideal for action as the rolling shutter (same for video is quite bad) For the time being I hang onto it for video production, yet it is the A99 I reach for when I take photos. As good as the sensor is here, cannot make up for the uninspired handling and ergonomics. Yes there is some fun to be had adapting lenses, there native AF is quite good still to this day probably good enough for most.Sony's mistake is to simply repeat the same body design across all of their crop and FF bodies, yet the design isn't that good! At the right price as a second/back up or video machine yes I would recommend it as long as you are aware of the limitations. The big one is no steadyshot/IBIS, yet many lenses Sony have don't have OSS, including the expensive 16-55mm F2.8! Taking hand held macro shots on a 30mm adapted lens (the Sony E version is F3.5 optically nowhere near as good and doesn't have OSS either!), I struggle to get sharp shots unless I pump the ISO up, yet my old Dynax 5d I can get sharp shots at ISO 400 with ease. A sharp 6mp image is worth more than a fuzzy 24mp one!So in closing nice build, good sensor for photo and video and decent jpegs too (tends to expose a bit hot in my experience I often use -0.7EV) small point there. What lets it down is the poor body design and lack of sensor based IS. Worth a look maybe, yet I can't see myself keeping this long term. It also convinced me that Sony don't take APS-C seriously, I would not invest in E Mount system as the needs of users who require a better designed body are not met.
