This really works with damp hair to leave a matte dry shine and style to your hair and is very light on the hair......except its own storage weight. Just a note of caution if looking for a 50ml to use for travel (hand luggage), then this is not suitable as it arrives in a glass jar and is nearly double weight of any other 50ml products...and as heavy as 100ml pastes but that's its only minus...as it really is a great hair product. Apothecary 87 Matte Paste | Premium Formulation | Matte Finish, Medium Hold, Light Weight Arrived in its own glass storage jar with screw on lid. Opening it and you can see its a solid paste as it hasn't moved in various storage conditions (upside down etc.) as no markings on the lid and the fill marks in production are still visible. On smelling the product, it reminds me more of a wafer thin chocolate you eat after dinner and not quite the vanilla sense... more a faint chocolate smell. The paste is quite solid and requires a bit of pressure to dig out. You only need a small quantity, so the trick is to try to only take a smearing over the fingertips rather than a lump. Once you have a quantity and warmed it up between fingertips, you can apply to damp hair. I would fully recommend only damp hair as the paste seems to attract the moisture from your hair and thus not only styles\holds you hair but dries it out for a more natural look. This quick drying of your hair can make needing to re-apply more paste as I tend to start of small and not have paste left over. Once applied, the style stays in place and can be brushed out quite easily. Due to the low quantity needed to hold the hair style, this product will more than likely last 5-6 months if not longer as I only feel part way through after 2 months. Compared to other products, it is noticeable how much less of this paste you are using when compared to shop brands. The only note of caution I have for this paste is that the storage weight is twice as much as other 50ml pastes that could be used for holidays\hand-luggage. Just for awareness if you are away for a weekend that its on the heavy side for packing.

Tried this one after using Label M for years. I usually apply it to wet hair, and add more for texturising when my hair is dry. It smells great but I've found you have to use a lot of it for texture. If the wind hits it too much, or you spend too long styling, it basically just disappears. Label M and Brickell are much better.

Apothecary 87 Matte Paste I’m always on the lookout for the ‘perfect’ hair product, so I was keen to give this a try when my normal product (Baxters) doubled in price. This is supplied in a smart looking 50ml black glass jar. The product itself is a grey, almost silvery, colour – I wondered at first if this might make my dark hair look lighter, but it was fine in use. First impressions are that is smells good, a subtle vanilla chocolate fragrance that I really like. It’s a soft paste that is easy to get out of the jar even on cold December mornings, it works well in the hand too. I have short hair and I style it a bit rough and messy; this paste is wax and clay based and you can feel the clay start to ‘bite’ and become more sticky as you work it in your hand, but like most clays working it through your hair does tend to pull a bit as it dries. In use my hair feels dry to the touch, not greasy or sticky like a wax can be, and it doesn’t leave marks on textiles. It’s easy to wash out too. It holds my style well, has a good matt finish but looks natural. I didn’t find it especially easy to restyle my hair throughout the day though. What I liked about it: • Soft and easy to work. • Smells great. • Nice matt finish. • Holds style well. What I didn’t like about it: • Not as easy to rework as some products. I like this paste. It’s a fair price, has a really nice fragrance, and it styles well. Recommended.

The paste is OK to use. goes on ok, and has a medium hold and matt look. The fragrance however is unbelievable. it has a very strong and overly sweet fragrance which is about as far from masculine as you can get. I think it's pitched somewhere teenage girls bedroom and those putrid fruit fragrance vape's. I don't think i could survive a second day leaving this vapour trail behind me and will have to assign this trial to the bin!

In it's natural form very stiff. The problem is when warming up or adding a little moisture it clumps up into bits. This means not only do you get an uneven spread on your hair, but it's just hard to style. To be fair the end result is matte and the hold feels strong but for daily use it's just too much work.
