The over-discharge protection is on the board, and it takes effect on both the built-in battery and the battery connected to the screw terminal.

Does this have a way to do a safe shutdown when power goes out?

Hello, the LO_DT pin on PiPower is used for safe shutdown. LO_DT means Low detect. When the PiPower battery voltage is low, this pin goes from low to high. You can use this signal to connect to the IO port of the Raspberry Pi, and configure the IO port on the Raspberry Pi as a shutdown button. Or write a script to detect the signal of this pin and shut down. Thanks for your understanding.
