Better than a travel guide
Not merely a collection of recipes, a Taste of Russia gives the reader a picture of daily life. And this updated edition highlights the contrast from soviet era to now. It's one of those cookbook you read like a novel. There are no illustrations, but the prose alone does an outstanding job of showing the reader Russian hospitality.Recipes are clear and easy to follow, too. More than sufficient accommodation is made for the North American cook.

I was looking for certain recipes. I did not find them in this book. I have not tried any of the recipes either. The things I wanted to cook were not listed but the book does give a great flavor of Russian cooking/dining.

A sort of American-Russian Nigella...
I do like this book. It provides a lovely cultural context - the author had a Belorussian granny and went on to study Russian literature so the text is peppered with literary food-based references and reflections on how Russian cooking has changed since the author was travelling as a student in Soviet Russia. Most tricky thing will be dealing with imperial/US cup measurements but the recipes look practical and they're not rammed with esoteric ingredients.
