Fails to Situate Economics within Larger Natural Ecosystem
How do heavy metals, traveling in underground plumes around mines, impact ground water? Why is there mercury in birds' eggs around mines? What is the effect of methylated mercury on the human fetus? What is mountaintop removal? Why is it practiced? What is the cause of the "dead zone" at the mouth of the Mississippi? Why are Florida manatees starving? What is a CAFO? What is the relationship between dead zones, fish kills, starving manatees and economic growth?Economic growth is destroying the natural world (ecocide). Pursuit of economic growth, using *any* source of energy, will accelerate the ecocide.Economics must first, and in introductory texts, be situated in the broader context of Earth, social systems, and our environment. This text fails to situate economics within a broad ecological context. We need a text that is "post-growth."
