Worth it for hassle-free access
I installed the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt on my front door and it’s been one of the best “quality of life” upgrades I’ve made. The hardware feels solid and secure (typical Schlage), and the aged bronze finish looks great and hasn’t shown fingerprints the way shinier finishes do. Setup was straightforward: the app walked me through pairing to Wi-Fi and calibrating the bolt, and I had it working within minutes. The biggest win is keyless entry—no more hiding spare keys or worrying about lockouts. The touchscreen is responsive, and I love being able to create and delete access codes from my phone. It’s perfect for guests and deliveries, and if you host on Airbnb, being able to make time-based codes is a game changer. Smart home integration has been reliable for me. I use it with Alexa/Google for lock status checks and routines, and the auto-lock feature gives me peace of mind when someone forgets to lock up. Notifications have been accurate, and I like being able to see when a specific code was used.

Don't pass on this lock!!
Love this lock! It works so well, and even 150 miles away. We got this for a our rental home and it takes only a few seconds to enter codes for our renters. Easy to install, a great buy!

Installed today. Installation and setup were pretty straightforward.
6/27/20 update: still no major issues to date. The lock ‘just works’. We don’t think anything special about it day to day and that’s probably as it should be. Only complaint long term is only way to light the panel at night is to touch a button. Best so far is to memorize wheee the lock button is and press that as it won’t register as a number entry. Batteries don’t last quite as long as they claim (no surprise) but it’s not been particularly hungry either using amazon’s batteries. 8/17/19 update: still going strong. Schlage has released several firmware updates but I haven’t been able to tell any difference. So that part has been seamless. I use the Schlage app and not Amazon Key and have had zero problems to date. The lock can not be in both modes at the same time. It’s either an Amazon Key or using Schlage. Without a camera for Amazon to open your front door I’m not sure of the use of letting Amazon manage your lock. The lock in Schlage mode works fine with Alexa. A few hiccups with the app early on where it would act like it forgot or couldn’t find the lock. But that hasn’t happened now for quite a bit. That may have been part of the firmware updates. Anyhow I’d buy it again. Only complaint is that they are expensive and you have to have a locksmith to rekey them if you have more than one and want the keys to match. Original review: Bought this to replace an old Kwikset that had the finish worn off from years in the Florida sun. We will see how well this finish lasts (I replaced the door handle with a matching set as well). Installation was pretty straight forward, though I did have to do a little work on the door jam to install the deeper double plate that comes with Schlage locks (this is important BTW, as it's what gives these locks a better break in resistance rating over their competitors. Without that plate and extra long screws your lock installation isn't as secure as it otherwise would be). This unit is much quieter than the lock is replaced, and it's also more compact. I can still hear it, but it's not that loud. I also had to go and find some door paint to touch up the areas the old lock covered that this one doesn't. The app gets bad reviews, but I think that's because of some of the other locks and not so much the app itself. With this lock, I had zero problems installing it and setting it up. It took a few minutes to join my network and probably 3-5 minutes to do the firmware update. The Alexa skill was also quick and mostly painless. I also setup an account for my wife and shared the lock permissions with her, so she can do everything from her phone as well except delete the lock from her account. Getting this part to work is a little tricky, since it's not well documented. I only figured out because a Shlage rep had posted on here in reply to one of the other negative reviews about what you needed to do. You have to give them a virtual key but to do that the app wants, on an iPhone anyhow, to automatically share something but it doesn't tell you what. After some fumbling around I figured out it wanted to send the text of an e-mail with a onetime use password. The app should just do this automatically instead of opening the iOS share menu, as things like AirDrop don't work (or better yet MAKE AirDrop work for this so I can do the exchange that way!). Likewise, on my wife's phone the link from this e-mail opened the app store and then took me to the app page which allowed me to launch the app and then it asked me for that code. Seems like the link should just ask if you want to open the app and do that (like Facebook does). Lastly, the app doesn't know your type of lock in advance, so it gives you the option to use HomeKit right from the first screen, but this lock doesn't support HomeKit. So that might cause people some grief as well. Overall, I'd say 5 stars for the lock and 3.5 stars for the app, but mostly because of the lack of directions for the shared setup I noted above. I applaud Schlage for participating in reviews and hopefully they will take the feedback to heart. Let's also hope they spent more than a few minutes thinking about the security of this thing and employed some smart people in the use of good crypto, nonces, etc. so it's really secure and not hackable. No excuses for that in this day and age when there are many competent security professionals they can pay to design these things.

Total Trash
Got the lock and installed it. The directions are straight forward. Locked worked great the first day. Some things to note. • The hole where the bolt goes into the door was too small for this lock, so I had to make it a little bigger even though I had just removed another Schlage lock from the hole. • The screw holes on the striker plate for the frame side of the door did not line up with existing holes. They send you two plats but neither worked so I had to leave my old plate there. Couldn't drill new holes because the old ones were too close. • During installation of the lock itself you put the number pad in place from the outside and then attach a plate to the number pad from the inside. Don't over tighten the screws on the plate. Tighten them just enough to keep the key pad from moving around. If you over tighten you will find the screws to attach the inside part of the lock are too short. Now for the problem I really have. On day two my app, I am using the Schlage app, says I have no locks. I can unlock and lock the door by hand and I get notices on my phone, but I cannot use the app to lock or unlock the door or add new pass codes. Good thing I wasn't depending on the phone app to let anyone in the house. At this point I will never be able to rely on the lock for that issue. I attempted to reconnect the phone app to the lock, but the lock just flashes a red light and beeps. Right now, I honestly would not recommend this lock to anyone who will ever rely on using the phone app to open the door. If you just want a push button deadbolt then it appears to work for that. In my opinion having that luxury is certainly not worth $250. Little more information on steps I took to rectify this problem. Other than calling the Schlage folks for help. Oh, I did that too, but they will only help you during their business hours and that happens to be when I am at work myself. Also, don’t try their website troubleshooting because that just runs you in circles. • Deleted and reinstalled the app. Could not connect. • While following the directions on the app I randomly pushed the button on the inside of the battery pack. The phone actually paired with the lock but the lock would not connect to my WiFi so I could not proceed. • Factory reset the lock and repeated the steps of connecting including pushing the button on the battery compartment. Connected to the phone but no Wifi. • Removed and replaced the battery and reset the lock. Still no Wifi. • Provided my user information to my son who downloaded the app on his Android. He followed the directions on his app and everything worked great. Even though the app shows I have no lock paired with my phone I still get messages when someone locks and unlocks the door. Strange things. Since the lock and app are completely unreliable I will be sending it back. Oh, and why does the app need to have access to my location? That in not information that is relevant to me operating a lock. ****Update**** The lock magically reappeared in the app after being gone for two days. I guess they updated the app to fix the WiFi problem. I will continue to use the lock and app up to the point where I am out of time to return the lock. At that point if everything is still working I will come back and update my rating. For now I’m keeping it at 1 star. ****Update II**** I have been using the lock since it started working again. I have not had issues since. My wife actually purchased a second one and we now have on on the front and back door. They both have worked mostly flawlessly since the app was updated. ****Update III**** This thing is the biggest piece of crap. I have had this lock installed for about 8 months now. I have the issues listed above. The lock sucks down batteries is constantly losing connection with my family's phones and now it has completely stopped working. Oh and be ready to reset the lock and reconnect it EVERY time you have to change batteries. Update: lock died after 5 yrs. If you have $200 to spend on a digital lock and the convenience is worth it to you go for it. For me, a $200 lock should last a long time. I had 2 of these locks. One failed just inside the warranty window and Schlage replaced it. The other died in 5 years and Schlage will do nothing.

Nice lockset
Nice lockset, easy to install. Battery time lasts quite a while so much so you almost forget you need them until you do - keep some back ups. Love the ability to use remotely, having had some members of house forget to lock and then you can!! You can also see when people come in and out and if you have needs for people to enter house they can have their own code.

The wireless functionality is good for two reasons: 1) If you think you forgot to lock the font door. 2) If you need to give someone temporary access you can give them a code. One thing to remember is you'll still want a key as a backup, so you'll need to get a re-keying kit so that all the locks match. It's not the trickiest procedure, but it's not trivial either since getting the pins right and not losing springs can be a bit tricky.

After much research, I finally bit the bullet and bought a Schlage Encode, and I'm so glad I did. I love this lock! Installation instructions (especially the online interactive instructions) made it easy to install, although I did have to make a few minor modifications because it didn't quite retrofit to my old lock fittings. Now that it is installed, everything seems to be working perfectly. The Schlage Home app makes it super easy to lock/unlock the door (great to do from the car when you have an armload of shopping or from bed if you're not sure the door is locked), set up user codes for specific dates and times (which I need for my Airbnb guests) and notify me when the door is locked and unlocked. It can be set up to automatically lock or not after the door is open (great for when people leave to ensure the door is locked). I'm so happy not to have to take my key with me when going out. Definitely worth the price.

The Scglage WiFi Automatic Door Lock is a game-changer! Easy to install in under 30 minutes, it connects seamlessly to your smartphone for remote locking/unlocking. The app is user-friendly and sends real-time access alerts, making it great for security. The auto-lock feature is convenient, and temporary codes for guests are a huge plus. Reliable and efficient, it's perfect for a hassle-free, smart home experience. Highly recommend!

I had door installers put these on a new door for me (not a locksmith). Then I had someone else set it up for me. The app works great, takes only 1-2 seconds to respond. I was a little lost at first but the guide on Schlage's blog helped me out a lot. Easy to set up new users and virtual keys. Love it! It looks really pretty too ^_^ I bought mine with the matching handle and interior door levers :)
