Schwalbe Smart Sam Performance Wired Tyre with Dual Compound 450 g - 28 x 1.40 Inches, 700 x 35C (37-622), Black

I love these tyres which I used to up rate the road version previously fitted by my local bike shop. The bike had been stood for years and the tyres rotten, so asked the cycle shop to fit new ones. Nearly broke my neck cycling along wet and muddy cycle/bridle paths to work - not a good way to start the day! These have handled slick cobbles and muddy ground well and haven't made roadwork difficult as the tread isn't overly pronounced. Great for hybrid bikes which are used off road on occasions. They've also stood up to broken glass and thorns, with only minor punctures which were easily repaired.

Having bought a second bike I wanted to convert my original bike from slick road tyres to trail tyres, so being a fan of Schwalbe looked on their website to try and find the best that they do for this purpose. Having settled on these Smart Sam tyres I purchased a pair and fitted them. Everything seems to be fine except Schwalbe claim that the rolling resistance(on tarmac) would be as good as the Lugano tyres that were fitted and having ridden it quite a bit i'm quite sure that this is not true. So please be aware of this fact. I also think that they do not give as much grip as the Schwalbe Land Cruisers that I have fitted to another bike because having tried to get up a steepish incline covered with silt the rear wheel spun which almost made me come off the bike. On the plus side they are very light weight and therefore you do not pay a big penalty with handling(and effort).

Best all-round tire for 700mm hybrids out there! I now have them fitted on my Trek 8.4 DS and they are SO much better than the rubbish bontragers that came with the bike. I lost the front wheel going down an off-road trail on the bontragers which caused some serious bruising and quickly looked for an alternative! Obviously, use a bit of discretion off-road - they have neither the width or chunkiness of true off-road tires. I have found road-holding good, also, in the narrow, pot-holed, often dung-covered lanes of South Devon and would never venture on these on a 'road bike'. However, the cost of 'good grip', I guess, they are prone to wear and become smooth all too soon for my liking!! Rolling is fine for the miles on-road I do - say up to 60 in a day!
