Fascinating, insightful, and very entertaining.
10/10 recommend! Dr. Gunitsky persuasively contextualizes the 20th centuryโs ideological development within a materialist framework. This book highlights how the major successes and failures of different political systems either legitimize them or delegitimize them to the rest of the world and how this can lead to the emulation of successful forms of government, whether it be liberalism, fascism, or communism.

A wonderful and provocative read!
Gunitsky has written one of those rare academic books that is both highly readable and provokes a fundamental rethinking of critical historical and political questions. He convincingly demonstrates how the waves of democratization and authoritarianism are critical shaped not just by horizontal diffusion or domestic processes but shifts in the global power structure. A wonderful read.

Timely and Well Worth Reading
Outstanding work on democratization. Author combines two sets of literatures, from comparativists on democratic transitions and from international relations scholars on power transitions, to explain how the rise or decline of great powers can create 'waves' of democratization in the international system. Focuses on World War One, Great Depression, World War Two, and the Soviet Collapse. Well written for a work of this scope. Essential to understanding potential sources of current democratic decline, possible 'autocratic' counter-waves as US-China rivalry intensifies. Also compliments work done on hybrid regimes.
