Product Description James Stewart and Grace Kelly star in Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller which explores the role of the voyeur. After breaking his leg during a shoot, photo-journalist L.B. 'Jeff' Jeffries (Stewart) is forced to spend a humid summer recuperating in his Greenwich Village apartment. The wheelchair-bound Jeff whiles away his time observing his neighbours through a telephoto lens, bestowing them with nicknames and growing familiar with their daily routines. However, his society girlfriend Lisa (Kelly) is exasperated and then alarmed when Jeff becomes obsessed with the notion that Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr), who lives in the apartment opposite, has murdered his wife... desertcart.co.uk Review Like the Greenwich Village courtyard view from its titular portal, Alfred Hitchcock's classic Rear Window is both confined and multileveled: both its story and visual perspective are dictated by its protagonist's imprisonment in his apartment, convalescing in a wheelchair, from which both he and the audience observe the lives of his neighbors. Cheerful voyeurism, as well as the behavior glimpsed among the various tenants, affords a droll comic atmosphere that gradually darkens when he sees clues to what may be a murder. Photographer L.B. "Jeff" Jeffries (James Stewart) is, in fact, a voyeur by trade, a professional photographer sidelined by an accident while on assignment. His immersion in the human drama (and comedy) visible from his window is a by-product of boredom, underlined by the disapproval of his girlfriend, Lisa (Grace Kelly), and a wisecracking visiting nurse (Thelma Ritter). Yet when the invalid wife of Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr) disappears, Jeff enlists the two women to help him to determine whether she's really left town, as Thorwald insists, or been murdered. Hitchcock scholar Donald Spoto convincingly argues that the crime at the center of this mystery is the MacGuffin--a mere pretext--in a film that's more interested in the implications of Jeff's sentinel perspective. We actually learn more about the lives of the other neighbors (given generic names by Jeff, even as he's drawn into their lives) he, and we, watch undetected than we do the putative murderer and his victim. Jeff's evident fear of intimacy and commitment with the elegant, adoring Lisa provides the other vital thread to the script, one woven not only into the couple's own relationship, but reflected and even commented upon through the various neighbours' lives. At minimum, Hitchcock's skill at making us accomplices to Jeff's spying, coupled with an ingenious escalation of suspense as the teasingly vague evidence coalesces into ominous proof, deliver a superb thriller spiked with droll humour, right up to its nail-biting, nightmarish climax. At deeper levels, however, Rear Window plumbs issues of moral responsibility and emotional honesty, while offering further proof (were any needed) of the director's brilliance as a visual storyteller. --Sam Sutherland Review: Nosey Parker - As i have stated previously. Rear Window
A classic Hitchcock film as they all are. James Stewart gives a great performance here, mostly from a wheel chair in this great noir offering. The camera work is well done, seeing as much had to be shot from near floor level. Grace Kelly is no slouch either, in fact the majority of the action is confined to the set of Stewart's room. The screenplay is clever, with Stewart trying to convince Grace Kelly, his Detective friend Doyle and Lisa his visiting nurse that foul play has occurred in the opposite flats. But has it? Is Stewart's imagination exacerbated by his confinement, or are his suspicions valid? A well made film and the cast really carries it off.

An absolute classic.
You don't need me to tell you how good this film is, check out the many other reviews and the fact that it still stands up well over fifty years after its creation. What I particularly like about it (apart from the two charming leads) is its simplicity - basic location, basic plot, no camera tricks, just distilled storytelling and tension. It has a kind of claustrophobia, but not in a horror film way, rather like another of my favourites of that era, Twelve Angry Men, also set around a simple plot and location. It feels like the essence of film-making. Thank goodness none of these classics were around for release in 3D.

Peeping Tom..... Not !
Not much to be said or written on this Hitchcock classic that hasn't already been mused over the years. It is possibly one of those films people have not watched due to indifference rather than a distaste for the genre. All i can say is BUY it, at an Amazon price its a deal ans thee quarters, as a film it is pure Gold from the very first frame you are met with so much visual information that you will enjoy watching it again without qualm. A superb film and worth the purchase.

classic thriller
I had seen this film many years ago on tv and knew it was good, but had forgotten the plot. It was excellent with excellent performances from James Stewart and all other actors. It is `different` and because Stewart is house bound (or flat bound) because of his injury, he takes to spending his time watching the activities and comings and goings of his neighbours through his windows which look onto back gardens and other flats. He believes a murder has been committed. The atmosphere is claustrophobic and the tension builds slowly and surprisingly. Highly recommended.

HITCHCOCK MASTERPIECE
This was a favourite of Hitch's and upon viewing you will see why. The macabre humour is there, the epitome of the cool blonde, Grace Kelly has never been more beautiful, and James Stewart is wonderful in this role and has great chemistry with Kelly. A very influential film in terms of the conceit and how it is lit, staged and set. An unmissable Hitchcock classic.

This is a great classic movie. But be careful. As this DVD came from Europe, it is zoned not to play on most Canadian DVD machines. It can, however, be viewed on a computer.
