Fill a 500 ml vial containing 15 grams potassium iodide with water. Cap and shake until all the potassium iodide is dissolved (This should now be a saturated solution of KI made with 15 grams of KI and water.) Set aside.

You need "Potassium Iodide" and "Prilled Iodine Crystals" to make Lugol's. I don't see any Prilled Iodine on amazon right now (there is one listing but it is sold out). Search ebay for Prilled Iodine.

I actually bought this a few months back for a science project myself involving elephant toothpaste. This does work, however when combined with 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, it is a terribly slow reaction. Combined with 35% Hydrogen Peroxide though was the best combination my partner and I saw. It expanded about 5x its size in under 2 seconds.

Q: What are its uses and at what volume?

I used it in a science class for an exothermic reaction,as well as time delaying reactions and accelerating reactions. 100g makes a largish reaction.
