All instructions for elephant toothpaste use liquid solution. would i use the crystals the same way? or do i need to turn the crystals into a liquid?

You need "Potassium Iodide" and "Prilled Iodine Crystals" to make Lugol's. I don't see any Prilled Iodine on amazon right now (there is one listing but it is sold out). Search ebay for Prilled Iodine.

I am looking for sodium iodide to make elephants toothpaste, will potassium iodide work the same?

I actually bought this a few months back for a science project myself involving elephant toothpaste. This does work, however when combined with 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, it is a terribly slow reaction. Combined with 35% Hydrogen Peroxide though was the best combination my partner and I saw. It expanded about 5x its size in under 2 seconds.
