Nice little 6hr hand hotter! Very pleased with it, lasts over 13 hours
After spending a lot of time researching hand warmers, I went for the 6 hour/12 hour Whitby hand warmer, which then fell apart after 5 weeks use... it literally pulled apart as I took the lid off. Knowing now that I only really need around 6 hours or so of warmth I then went for the Zippo 6 hour hand warmer. Arrived quickly, obviously smaller than the 12 hour Zippo/Whitby and bigger than my Zippo lighter (in photos for size comparison). The 12 hour Zippo and the Whitby are identical apart from the filling ports and cut outs in the lid. The thing I like about the 6 hour version is it has a flat base to stand it up after filling. It needs to be stood up for a few minutes before lighting. With the 12 hour you have to prop it up as it has a curved base. Easy to fill, the burner head is an exact fit on a Whitby and vice-versa, yet the position of the catalyst material inside the burner head is different, I find it easier to light the Whitby burner head as it's curved around the top of it, rather than laying flat inside the base of the Zippo burner head which is hard to get a Zippo lighter flame on it. After using it I find it gives more heat using the Whitby burner head than when using the standard Zippo burner head. First fill using the Zippo burner head gave exactly 6 hours and 5 minutes burn time, nice amount of constant warmth. Second fill but using the Whitby burner head gave 7 hours 45 minutes burn time and what seems like more warmth. Third fill using the Whitby burner head on it gave 11 hours and 10 minutes burn time. Absolutely brilliant. Being smaller than the 12 hour version it's easier to slip into gloves, or hold in your hand, and doesn't fill up a pocket, but being smaller it doesn't heat your entire pocket area compared to the larger 12 hour version, but it can leave a red mark on your skin if you have it for a length of time in a tight trouser pocket. Would I buy it again? Yes definitely, I wish I'd done that before wasting money on the Whitby hand warmer! Edited after 5 weeks use - Been using this daily, one thing that really bugs me is the Zippo catalyst/burner head... On a dog walk I usually have it in a trouser pocket and it's warm, but if I move it up to my jacket pocket and put my hand inside it, or I hold it in my hand outside of my pocket, then it goes cold after a while and goes out. I tried getting over this for days, carrying a lighter around with me and relighting it and it takes ages to get going again in the cold weather, sometimes not at all while I am outside. There is no way to keep it going outside of the pocket in cold weather, especially if it's windy. But with the Whitby burner head fitted there is zero problems, it's hotter, can be carried in my hand outside or inside my jacket pocket and it stays toasty hot. With the Whitby burner head fitted I have had just over 13 hours out of it so far. This could be due to the way I extinguish it though - I never let it burn out until it's cold, when I no longer need it I remove it from the felt bag and place it inside an old small rectangular metal sweet tin, close the lid to starve it of oxygen and place upright on the metal draining board. It goes cold in a few minutes. It stays in the airtight tin until next morning when it is filled up and lit. I imagine that there is still an amount of unused Zippo lighter fuel inside from the day before which increases the burn time the following day? Buy this 6hr Zippo and dump the Zippo burner head and buy a Whitby burner head for it, you won't regret it.

Very good, Nice heat and long lasting
After reading some mixed reviews I wanted to give a realistic view on this device. Firstly I was let down by another non amazon supplier on the Zippo Fluid so ended up buying Coleman fuel from Cotswold with a little trepidation! The good news is that Coleman fuel works a treat and for just £9 a litre its cheap. I followed the instructions precisely and on the first use carefully put 12 hours of fuel in and then importantly left it upright for 5 minutes for the vapour to spread. I then lit the top of the catalyser with a butane lighter for about 10 - 15 seconds. Now initially it was just lukewarm and I was worried that was as good as it might get..... but after about 20 minutes was getting hotter nicely while still in the sock, now what I didn't realise is that if you open the sock up it lets in more oxygen and gets hotter and if you pull the sock down a bit it gets really hot, in fact too hot to touch the metal. It seems to work really well in a pocket with the top of the sock cord not too tight. The effect of being in a coat or trouser pocket seems to insulate the heat nicely. I did a heat test using a baking thermometer on the outside of the metal case and it reached over 70 deg Celsius opened right up so all the vents showed with the sock just half covering and then with the sock completely over it and the cord loose went back to about 45 Deg. You can see the catalyst glowing orange in the dark and if you blow on it, its glows more brightly hence the heat being controlled via oxygen access. Its now nice and warm still after 11 hours of lighting. If you buy Coleman fuel it has a large neck on the bottle so I made a bigger hole with a modelling knife in the little small filler bottle that comes with the Handwarmer. It appears that the Zippo 125 ml fuel has a small spout which is probably easier. The Coleman fuel has a slight odor close up but isn't noticeable once the warmer is in a pocket and people say the same about Zippo fuel. Its a nice tactile feel with the curved edges and makes it feel very slim, it seems well made and for the price will be good value compared to the chemical hand warmers I also use which still have there uses in gloves and shoes (The 12 hour Zippo is just a little too large) This Zippo is going to be just great for Winter Cycling. Motorbiking, Skiing and Winter walks - Happy Days!!

Stops Numb Fingers Works Really Well
This Zippo Hand Warmer is so easy to use, and it looks really cool too. I really should've got one of these sooner, as the recent cold weather and snow has really caused the temperatures to plummet. Trying to use your hands outside without gloves has been virtually impossible due to the freezing temperatures, but this hand warmer has made a big difference. I would hold it in one hand while using the other hand for something else, and then swap over which hand I was holding it in. It has really helped to stop my hands and fingers from becoming numb so I can't recommend it highly enough to others. On my first use it was a bit difficult to get lit because I don't think I allowed enough time for the fuel to soak into the internal wadding. Once I got it going it lasted for the full 6 hours as advertised, and has been much easier to light on subsequent attempts. I have been using this every day during these cold snaps we've had, it has proven to be a very good purchase. If you need to use hands without gloves whilst outside in the cold weather then this would be a great idea for you. It can be put in your pocket when not held in the hands, and then swapped from pocket to pocket to spread the heat around the body. Do NOT take it out of the pouch when it's lit because it gets really hot and could easily cause a burn. When in the pouch the heat emitted is a perfect temperature and will not burn you. Probably not a good idea to leave it unattended anywhere there's flammable materials around as it could potentially cause a fire. For that very reason I got the 6 hour option instead of the 12 hour version because it will stay lit until the fuel inside has been exhausted.

Great hand warmer most of the time
I have used (orange) 12 hour zippo hand warmer now for a few months and overall I am well pleased with it. Sometimes it can be a little bit of problem keeping it running or getting it to light, or getting hot enough to be of use, but once you realize why its not behaving, you can then work around it. I have used Swan lighter fluid, works fine, and I find bic lighter good for igniting the catalyst. Matches work just as well but end up making the metal in the catalyst covered in black. Oddly my turbo lighter seems least effective in lighting it. Keep flame of for 10-15 secs on catalyst gets in going, only after I have left the fuel to soak into the hand warmer that is left upright. I know this is mentioned in instructions, but how many people really read the manual :) . The protective felt case is a bit thick so I end up using and old felt case from my charcoal hand warmer. And if the case covers all the air holes, its possible to starve the hand warmer of oxygen that it needs to keep it going. If you finding its not getting very hot, let it breath outside the felt cover (do not cover any of the holes) and it should get very hot after a few minutes, then place it back in the cover. On the measuring jug, I used a permanent marker to mark lines for 3,6,9 hours on my 12 hour fuel jug. So far I have used it approx 10 times, each time filled up to approx 6 hours, and I predict at least another 2-4 fillings from a 100ml swan lighter fluid. If you find the cover/cap falls off, gently squeeze the cap and it should be snug when you place it back on the base part containing the catalyst. And if you have finished using the hand warmer before the fuel is used up, I use the felt cover to quickly remove the catalyst from the hand warmer.

Zippo hand warmer
Own one Zippo hand warmer - purchased a second for my partner. Works well and stays warm for around 6-8 hours. Good price. Quality item. Quick delivery to Amazon Locker of choice.

Superb for winter golf — lasts the full round with ease
Excellent hand warmer. Easily lasts 18 holes with plenty of warmth to spare, and the Zippo build quality feels a level above others I’ve tried. The black finish is smart and looks premium.

IMPORTANT INFO AS TO WHY YOU NEED ONE OF THESE
I couldnt recommend buying this thing enough -I'll need to explain why: I read mixed reviews of how effective these warmers are. Being a keen walker who occasionally hikes I decided to give one a try and I'm very glad I did! When I first bought the warmer I fueled it up and lit it properly (there are lots of useful videos on youtube on how to do this). During this 1st test I was in my living room on a cold night, but I did have the central heating on. The results of holding the heater by itself were underwhelming. Upon putting it in the padded insulating bag (which is supplied with it when you buy it) the heater became slightly warm. I would estimate 20 to 25 celcius. -this was in my living room, which was about 18 celcius. I wasnt too impressed but I decided to try it outside at some point. Tonight is cold, damp and windy outside, I live near the beach. I went for a quick walk along a costal path in the wind. I put on warm clothing including a waterproof coat and heavy jeans. Holding the warmer in my hand (inside its bag) it was good, but started to lose heat -it simply wasnt producing heat quickly enough -because the heat was being drawn away into the cold wind. Placing the warmer in my jeans pocket it then became quite impressive, in spite of the sea wind, my upper leg felt rather warm. Next, I decided to place it in the 'Napoleon pocket' on my coat -this is the chest pocket. WOW! Inside my jeans the warmer was reasonable, however in the chest pocket of my coat it was simply amazing. Insulated by the material of my chest pocket the warmer easily reached the 20 to 25 celcius it had done in my living room. However, whilst 20-25c in a warm living room isnt impressive, when you are outside on a bitterly cold night it is a very different matter! It felt as if I had a small hot water bottle about the size of a hand propped against my side. Given that some coats have 2 chest pockets, I believe you could run two of them at once which would warm your whole torso. I also note that in spite of it being in my pocket (which was only slightly unzipped to let air in) the enclosed space didnt cause the warmer to go out. Obviously one of these warmers wouldn't be enough to save you in a truly serious outdoors situation. They are no substitute for proper clothing, BUT they are very useful. Give their simple and foolproof design and the fact they keep warmth for a full 12 hours they could be a big help in the cold. If you are outdoors, maybe walking through woods, moors or along a coast in damp and cold conditions having one (or two!) of these in your pocket (rather than using it as a hand warmer) it will make a big difference to your comfort levels!
