Better than the metal alternatives – consistent and reliable.
After returning a different brand for being inconsistent and poorly made, I’m thrilled with this Mitsubishi. Don’t let the plastic body fool you; it is significantly more robust and better engineered than the metal sharpener I replaced. It does exactly what it's supposed to do every single time. My only minor complaint is the lack of an instruction manual. I had to figure out the features through trial and error—for instance, the small red button on the handle adjusts the type of point (standard vs. blunt). It doesn’t come with a desk clamp, but the unit is stable enough that I don't miss it. While it’s manufactured in China rather than Japan, the quality control is excellent. Highly recommended for anyone tired of "rubbish" sharpeners.

A sharpener so good sharpening pencils becomes addictive!
I have to say, this is a fantastic pencil sharpener. It has, two settings, a short point, which leaves the very tip of the lead flat, and a long point which gives an exceedingly sharp point. The crank and blade assembly is easily removable for cleaning (or declogging if you sharpen a pencil which has a broken lead in it). I would thoroughly recommend this. As a parent of two very creative (read: use/blunt a lot of pencils) i think this was one of my best buys ever, especially at the price I got through amazon. The sharpening action is so good and so quick that for weeks after my purchase I ended up scouring the house for any unsharpened pencils (as did my girls). I read one bad review above (from amazon.com rather then .co.uk) by Ellen Graham which stated "It has not sharpened one pencil for me. I've tried several different kinds. The design is interesting and unique, but the product simply doesn't work, I've tried everything.". I can only assume she either got a defective example, or didn't try reading instructions (and/or hadn't used a similar sharpener before).

Awesome product !!!
After much research into hand cranked sharpeners I went for this one and have not been disappointed. It does not come with, nor does it need, a desk clamp as the extendable arms hold the pencil firmly in place allowing you to hold the top of the sharpener with one hand and turn the crank with the other. The resulting super-long point is brilliant and the mechanism stops automatically when the pencil is sharpened - a feature that not all sharpeners have. This prevents unnecessary shortening of the pencil. The other great feature is the rubber grip which holds the pencil in place whilst it is being sharpened. Many other sharpeners have metal grips which leave small holes along the pencil shaft which can be quite unsightly. The rubber grips on the Mitsubishi avoid this problem. This is a little more expensive than some other sharpeners, but in my opinion, well worth paying the extra few pounds.

Good but made in China not Japan
Plastic but seems good quality and works well. Less likely to dent than sheet metal. Longer straight point compared to Helix which makes an equally sharp but concave point. Slightly larger than Helix. No desk clamp included. Rubber teeth to grip pencil without marking it. All good but I was expecting a Japanese import to be made in Japan - this has Made in China on it.

Sharpens to a long, sharp point and does not mark or chew my pencils. love it.
This Mitsubishi Manual Pencil sharpener is perfect for sharpening pencils to long, sharp points. I have used it on Polychromos, Prismacolour, Albrecht Dürer, Daler-Rowney, and Museum Aquarelle. The sharpener is black plastic with a rubberized pad underneath to prevent slipping. There is no way to fix it to the table, but it is easy to hold while using it. I love the fact that pencils are firmly held and unmarked during sharpening. I am proud of my pencils and do not want them to look blemished and tatty. I have given five stars because, as a pencil sharpener, it does a really good job. However, the plastic does feel a little tacky and lightweight, and the method of emptying is a little clumsy and not very convenient. The handle has to be removed at every emptying, where I think that a removable drawer would have been better. That being said, it is only my point of view and should not put anyone off buying this sharpener; you may feel differently. I am happy to recommend it and would buy it again.

It’s wonderful to use and a thing of beauty
I sometimes use the phrase “You get what you pay for”. Normally after some piece of tat I thought was a bargain breaks. But it can also be used to justify the high price of something. I’ve found many low price high quality objects to hopefully not fall for this luxury myth. Plus as I don’t have unlimited funds to spend on things, I believe the value of an object can and should be measured by more than cost. As a result I tend to put a lot of time into research and reading reviews. Take pencil sharpeners for example. You can spend well over £100 on a manual pencil sharpener but is it the best? Nah. I don’t think so. It’s metal jaws grip and chew the paint off the pencil. That’s lazy engineering. A botch job. I read somewhere that this, the Mitsubishi KH-20 was the best mechanical pencil sharpener in the world. And I think it might be. But if you want it you need patience. Lots of patience. I ordered this sharpener 107 days before it arrived. To be honest, as I ordered it over three months ago I’d forgotten all about it. Then when I saw the Japanese customs slip on the box, it all came back. ALL the pencils in the house are sharp and I will scowl at those using pens because I could happily sharpen pencils all day. But only with this. It’s wonderful to use and a thing of beauty. Bring me your blunt pencils. Or even your semi-blunt ones.

This is a great pencil sharpener that produces super pointy tips on pencils. When the pencil is done sharpening, the resistance in the handle drops and no more material is removed after that, so you don't waste your pencils unnecessarily. The sharpener can be easily disassembled for cleaning. The container for shavings is very large. No clamp to attach it to a desk was provided, even though there's a hole for it in the body of the sharpener.
