When was the last time you were afraid? Really afraid? Brace yourself for the ultimate transplant... The human soul! The devil is in the music in this sleek and scary piece of movie necromancy - when a failed musician-turned-journalist (Alan Alda, M*A*S*H) interviews a reclusive aging pianist (Curt Jurgens, The Enemy Below), he doesn't realize he's being interviewed himself... to be the vessel for the Satanist's dying soul! Back in a youthful body, the pianist plans for a long life in the spotlight, but when the journalist's wife (Jacqueline Bisset, Bullitt) realizes her husband's twice the man he used to be, she prepares to make his new life a living Hell! Television veteran Paul Wendkos (Cannon for Cordoba) directs this cult horror classic, based on a novel by Fred Mustard Stewart (The Norliss Tapes) with a screenplay by Ben Maddow (The Asphalt Jungle). The stellar cast includes Barbara Parkins (Valley of the Dolls), Bradford Dillman (Chosen Survivors), Pamelyn Ferdin (The Beguiled), and William Windom (TV s The Farmer s Daughter).

Classic
Love this old movie! I was thrilled to find it again on Amazon. Alan Alda actually plays a bit of a villain and does it quite well.

Entertaining
Entertaining. First saw this years ago when it aired on network television. Stuck with me. I thought it was very creative and creepy. Bisset's character Paula is not a very sympathetic or likeable protagonist but serves as an attractive antihero focus. The early plot could have used more developement. Perhaps she is going on hunches and intuition, but Paula seems to jump to very early, correct conclusions based on very little practical interaction. I would like to have seen she and Myles drawn in more gradually, with further character developement of the villains before the revelations of the underlying truth. Still, it's enjoyable and worth a watch by anyone enjoying this sort of horror.

The Devil Deals with Beauties
I watched this movie years ago near its release date but one thing drew me back to watch it again. That thing was the beautiful Barbara Parkins. It is probably just a "guy thing", but I just happen to consider her to have been blessed with one of the world's most captivating faces for the time. Her poses in Playboy magazine should also support my feelings about how men see and react to her elegance and charm. The story is straight forward with a slight twist at the end. I also like Alan Alda and would have loved to have been in his shoes for this film. Check out Valley of the Dolls for more Parkins as well as TV's Peyton Place. The camera is purposely distorting the images during certain scenes and that is ok especially if one is dealing literally with the devil. I typically don't care much for occult films but in this case it may just be sentiment.

Sleek, fast paced, brilliant film!
This 1971 film foray directed by Paul Wendkos and produced by Quinn Martin is a stunning, slick, glossy tour de force into 1970s fashion, frolick, and obsession with advanced high Magick and the lavish net set life style. The screenplay and cinematography is excellent. The cast is gorgeous and talented; Alan Alda, Jacqueline Bisset, Curd Jurgens, along with superb supporting cast members. But the absolute gem is Barbara Parkins. There is never a dull moment, the banter is witty, fashion is to die for, and music score Is haunting and unforgettable. This is a movie that speaks of a naive woman's struggle and triumph over evil, using her enemy's weakness to gain the ultimate victory. A true classic film that is worth watching again and again.

Five-Star Blu-ray!!!!!
I have seen "The Mephisto Waltz" at least 20 times on video/DVD since my first viewing in the theater when it was released originally. I was thrilled to see it was available on Blu-ray, and boy, it does not disappoint. Absolutely the best transfer imaginable, with just a very few, tiny flaws. Better than the 70 mm print. It was like I had never watched it before. So much detail in color, camera work, astounding music soundtrack. Literally even noticed plot connections that I never had before. Simply awesome!

thriller oculto
¡Recomendado!

The Mephisto Waltz
This is quite an intriguing film with an original plot, and I always find added interest when a piece of music is linked to a story albeit different from the original Liszt imagined. A devil worship film with a bit more class and an effective twist at the end.
