The Complete Book of Maps and Geography Workbook

arrived on time and as ordered.

I was hesitant to order this Thinking Kids Complete Book of Maps & Geography by Carson-Dellosa, an updated version of the highly-reviewed edition published in 2009, as it had no preview or reviews. Thankfully, it is the same. Not having seen the entire inside of the previous version, I cannot say for sure what is different other than it having a few more pages in the states category and no free poster and stickers. The cover art is updated and there is a purple header and footer on each page, but all of the Amazon "Look Inside" pages of the previous edition match identically with this book. The previous edition claimed to have 353 pages, while this updated edition has 416. The first 5 pages are the title/table of contents, and the answer key begins on pg. 381. There are a few pages with blank reverses for cutting out shapes, which is so awesome! One of the downsides of Evan Moor's Beginning Geography is that you had to photocopy everything, which, at 10 cents/page, makes it like buying another $10 workbook every 100 pages.What I like about this collection is how much review and thoroughness you get for price. There are games, activities, crafts/projects, a crossword, and a thorough breakdown of each of the 50 state's highlights (landmarks, topography, bird/flower, a little history, what the state is known for, fun facts) and Washington, D.C.. My 1st grader is in love with geography and maps, and many of these pages have intrigued her and held her interest. I can definitely see how this book will need to grow with us. We will probably get to use about 25 pages for her 1st grade year, and as she shows interest in doing gridwork and meridians/time zones, we'll add more pages. Excellent book for the 2nd-5th grader.

My 4th grader has enjoyed this book! Easy and clear instructions. Recommend!

Supplement and reinforcement to the lesson

The book was easy to understand and follow. Had a great number of lessons and maps.

After seeing it in person, I can't wait to get started! I'm planning to use it with my (high) 2nd and 4th grade age boys. It's definitely a book that would be better to have one per child. I'm going to use it as part of my homeschool curriculum, and thought maybe the boy could share it and work together, but now that I'm seeing it, it's good enough to order each their own. I love how actively the kids learn about each state! (Each state has 2 pages. One that gives you a map, and you circle and color the landmarks from the colorful key in that state. The other page has a large empty state map and you use an atlas, map, or look online to "add the names of the following places on the map below....Here's what you add to Colorado : an astronaut's hometown, the state capital, The Colorado River, the highest city in America, the site that inspired "America the Beautiful," the home of the US Air Force Academy, the national park that preserves Cliff Dwellings, a ski community whose population grows by almost five times on winter weekends, the mining town of Pueblow, the Rio Grande, and the Dinosaur National Monument.I am going to be learning a lot too!

This should be standard curriculum for third grade. It moves through each topic, building skills from zero to the different types of political, geographical, and time zone maps. My 9 year old picks this book over ever other book for homeschool. He has no idea he's learning. Perfect.The individual states parts are a bit odd, I wanted a better worksheet for each state but we just approach it as a reading chapter, and ignore the chart provided. Then I ask him follow up questions about the state he read to test what he's remembered.Absolute winner of a book. I love the page where it teaches you how to find seats in a theater or sports arena. I had to figure that out in my twenties by myself, and wasn't always successful. We expanded on that concept by looking at real seating charts for venues. So much fun.We went to the zoo recently, and stopped at the map, and he was shocked that it looked just like the maps in this book. Never thought my kid would thank me for a workbook being applied to real life so quickly. Immediate connection to using what you've been taught.

A very thick book. Looks like it will work great for my 5th grader for this year in homeschooling to teach them a little about Maps and Geography. It has a great answer key also.
