Castanets on a stick
Not the most castanet-like sound in the world, but they get the job done, they sound decent, they're easy to play, they were really cheap, and because they're mounted on a wooden handle you don't have to strap them to your fingers and prance around like a toreador. I like that. You can make it more castanet-sounding by holding it further from the bottom, tightly. As for being not "sturdy", can't say I agree with that, mine still function, and no, it probably will not work too well in drum circles, but if you think a $3 instrument can compete with a squadron of djembes you need to knock on a door marked reality.

These take a bit of practice, but it's worth it.
Want portable percussion and these plus the wooden shaker eggs fit the bill.

Clackers -"castanets" on a stick. Exactly as expected.
These can be played like "cheater" bones, somewhat similar to how bones can be played, by letting them dangle down from your hands like bones or rhythm sticks, or played like "cheater" spoons by holding them the other way round in your hand, like spoons, or played like "air drums" by holding them like drumsticks, or just rattled around to make noise. Sure, these are probably suited for children rather than serious musicians, but I'm seldom serious, so I play lots of odd instruments including clackers. These are fun.

Great for entertaining small children
My son loves to play with this castanet. He has had a great time banging it on the couch or his leg and in his hand making noise. He really enjoys watching me or my husband dance around making noise with it too. It has provided countless hours of entertainment and the price is perfect.

Disappointed.
Only 1 side claps or hits the wood to make sound at a time. The sound is kinda loud and scary to kids. I purchased this to get kids attention while taking pics but this is just going to scare them. Disappointed.

He said it's fine. Came wrapped in plastic
One of my students accidentally broke the music teacher's instrument, so I replaced it. He said it's fine. Came wrapped in plastic, and looks sturdy.

It is not good for use with children
Part of the middle piece broke off after one use. It is not good for use with children.
