The Phantom The Complete Avon Novels Volume 2: The Slave Market of Mucar (The Phantom Avon)

Basil Copper's First Phantom Novel
This is the second novel in Hermes Press Oversized reprints of the 15 novels that appeared bi-monthly starting in 1972. Besides the larger size the only difference is Hermes Press has also corrected a few spelling errors.Lee Falk creator of the Phantom and Mandrake the Magican continued to write the daily & Sunday Strips of both of those characters. So while Falk did indeed write the first novel he could not also write a novel every other month. So other writers where brought in to write novels.Basil Copper was a successful British Novelist of Fantasy and Horror who wrote over 50 novels. He wrote some Solar Pons novels. Solar Pons was a knock off version of Sherlock Holmes who was very successful in his own right.Copper was instructed to base the story on the Daily Comic Strip continuity from 1961 called the The Slave Market Of Mucar. This story was originally illustrated by Falk's Long Time Phantom artist Sy Barry. The basic plot is quite ingenious about a Prison Warden who helps plot the escape of his own prisoners just so they can be sold in an illegal Black Market Slave Auction in the city of Mucar.Copper writing style is quite good but he really doesn't focus on the action. He spends several chapters from other characters viewpoints before we even get to see the Phantom.I wil say that this novel does offer a very good portrayal of the Phantom's Jungle Patrol and I did come away with a better understanding of the organization then before. The lack of any other of the Phantom's supporting characters probably hurts the novel. Seeing The Phantom with Diane Palmer his girlfriend or Guran his Pygmy friend would have added diemension to the character.Copper would write this novel and the next before he was replaced on the series. Not sure if Falk was unhappy with his work or he just moved on. Eventually Ron Goulart would become the lead writer here, with an occasional Novel from Falk himself. This is a project I strongly support and recommend to any Phantom fans.

Cannot be read on Kindle Keyboard III.gen
I couldn't read this book on my Kindle Keyboard III.gen and I was so disappointed. I like my old Kindle, it is kind to my eyes and not so aggressive as my tablet. I also leave my tablet at my parents, and keep Kindle at home.Story itself was interesting, but it was not so interesting as first book. Maybe I missed Diana as a female reader. :) It was just lacking something (I cannot define it) and at the end I was sure I wouldn't pay 10€ for the book as I did to read it.

Fun read
A little predictable but a fun read. The good guys win and the bad guys get their just desserts. Worth the time to read

Phantom adventure novelization
This comic strip novelization narrates one Phantom adventure. It does not pick up where the first book leaves off. It does include some good background on the Jungle Patrol and the current Phantom's interaction with it. As with #1, there are typos, but it's still a worthy read for Phantom fans.
