Unique and Unusual
I watched this film because I like the main actor Connor Jessup. I saw him in a popular TV series where he ironically played the same type of character; a troubled teen confused about his sexuality. He is such a handsome actor and I am not surprised to see him starring in a new movie. His role in this movie is quirky, and different as is the film, but I found myself glued to every minute. I think this will be popular among young adults and teens, although, I am a middle aged mom. The opening of the movie Oliver witnesses a hate crime as a young boy and begins to question whether or not he is gay. I had to look away during the beating of a gay teen, because it was so gruesome, but don't expect to see scenes as violent as this one. He worries about his macho father's judgment of him, especially after his parents divorce, and he develops a crush on a handsome co-worker. But Oliver finds support by talking to his pet hamster, but I didn't find it unusual for some reason. His hamster is a big part of his world. This relationship reminded me that Oliver could be empathetic and compassionate, even though he frequently hurt others he cares about. I recommend it for most. However, not those who like fast moving car chases or lots of violence.

funny, light
This is at times, funny, light, sexy, sad and harrowing. One of the best movies I've seen about the subject of becoming an adult. It doesn't really have to do with the main character being gay or straight, it is more about how children need to overcome messages given to them by their parents in order to - as the screenplay says - make their own dreams in this world. The movie freely and daringly veers between "reality", "dreams", "fantasy", "metaphor" and "memory". The metaphorical scene where Oscar, the lead character rids himself of his father's poison is one of the most chilling -- and Connor Jessup's acting makes it so chilling - scenes on film. We watch as the actor takes us from the character being a boy to being a man in the space of three or four long minutes during which I had to remind myself to breathe. This is written and directed by the same guy whose next project, I will definitely keep an eye out for as he showed so much talent and confidence in his filmmaking skills in this film.

Did not play in my Dvd
Looking forward to watching this, only to find out my dvd player alerts me to piracy copies. Because of this, Dvd would not play. So I have still been able to watch this. Morale of the story, make sure you buy the real deal from sellers, and not piracy copies. And giving this a one star is really a joke, doesn't deserve any.

Good, as far as gay movies go
The directing was spectacular. Really good use of color and lighting and thematic elements. The music was very fitting and I felt that even the strange parts all had their place, like it had a very solid idea of who it was, and the imagery was played with well. The director had an expert grasp of bringing emotion to a scene. The actors all did decently with what they were given but it was the writing that really kept me from loving this movie. It was almost there, but not quite. The dialogue was often out of place or unnatural. It made it hard for me to engage in the story completely as I would have liked. But it wasn't a waste of an hour and a half, and I'd be down to watch it again. I enjoyed it overall.

Not a simple story
It had a more complex plot than the usual, which is one reason I liked it. It wasn't just fun and games throughout the whole movie either. What really made the movie, above every other element, was the dynamite performance by Conner Jessup as Oscar. I can't applaud his acting talent enough. Watching this movie was an exhilarating experience. I wish I could fine more gay-themed movies of this caliber,

Important, but dark, beautiful movie.
Loved the main actor, Connor Jessup and the plot is very realistic as far as gay feelings. I identified.

Best movie
I love this movie not because of the Talented Conner Jessup but because it's the coming of Age of all teens. Having the pain in his gut and releasing that pain was so inspiring. Conner has moved me so much. He is a beautiful man.

Fantastic cinematography and directing
Fantastic cinematography and directing. What puts the movie above many other gay coming of age films is the slight psychological horror and flashes of surreal that accent it. Only thing I found frustrating was some of the dialogue seemed to pull back making as much of an impact as the filming, some characters just don't feel convincing in any capacity like the mother and best friend. Otherwise it was mesmerizing.

Memorable
A hard but ultimately rewarding watch . A delicate 9 year old boy trying to survive his parents divorce. Witnesses a brutal hate crime in Newfoundland where a young gay man is murdered with a metal rod. this has a devastating effect on him. His father loves him bit can not really communicate with him. He grows up damaged. also he is obsessed with horror. he is a graphic make up artist. And this becomes the expression of his inner turmoil. He is gay but does not know how to express it. Fantastic acting and directing. Incidentally this director wrote the book script and is gay and grew up in Newfoundland, and saw the lead actor at his uni. The only bit that is a hard watch but was inevitable was a brief rape scene at a party. Watch it you will not be disappointed. I was not. Respect to the director and Conner the lead actor.
