Darkstalkers Return
My review is going to exclusively talk about Dark Stalkers because that is the sole reason I bought this collection. I used to play the original Darkstalker, released in 1994, back in college and over the next three years a total of five Darkstalker games were released in the arcades and that was it. Although five games were released in a technical sense, the final two games were just modifications of Vampire Savior: World of Darkness. I didn’t realize when I bought this collection that two of the three most recent games were almost indistinguishable.Darkstalkers is really fascinating. There are comics and figures and statues and animations. Even up until today, new Darkstalker collectables are still being created. There just aren’t any new games since 1997. The closest Capcom came to a new game was in 2013, but it was still just an HD version of Vampire Hunter and Vampire Savior. Given that the Darkstalker series lasted just 3 years, it’s not surprising that the graphics and the gameplay evolved very little in that short period. There were only a handful or so of new characters added in the sequel games, but the characters are so iconic that not much else was needed.I’ve done a ton of research on Darkstalkers since buying this game and have discovered a whole new respect for the series. Darkstalkers set the standard for diverse characters. Not only are their appearances diverse but their gameplay style is radically different. Each character controls in an entirely unique manner and it goes way beyond just move set. The differences are astounding, and it really is one of the main strengths of the game. For example, if you back dash with Anakaris when he’s at the edge of the screen he will teleport to the other side of the screen. He is the only character that does that, and ALL the characters have little quirks and sometimes very large quirks. Once you establish the rules of the game, you’ll suddenly find a character that breaks a rule. I love that sort of thing. There are also a TON of game mechanics and moves that started with Darkstalkers. This is really a groundbreaking series.I’ve played many of the highest rated fighting games on the Switch including Blazblue, Under Night and Blade Strangers and I’m continually underwhelmed. One of the big problems is that it feels as if the developers constantly strive to expand the complexity as if they are being developed exclusively for tournament level players. I find myself unable to pull off many of the simpler combos in training modes and there’s not a chance in hell I can perform some of the dozen plus button combinations that often require precise timing. Fighting games is just one genre of game I enjoy but these games feel like they’re designed only for dedicated fighting fans. Darkstalkers is FAR more accessible to the casual fighting game fan then these recent fighting games. I also find the series more forgiving than the Street Fighter games from this era. It’s generally recognized the Darkstalkers peaked with Darkstalkers 3 and I would agree with that. Not only were the games groundbreaking for their time but they have also stood the test of time. I honestly enjoyed the Darkstalker games more than the fighting games released in the last decade. For various reasons, I haven’t played the heavy hitters like Street Fighter V, Mortal Kombat 11 or Smash Brothers but I really enjoyed Darkstalkers and I really enjoy all the lore. I ended up watching the four part Darkstalkers OVA and read the two hardcover Darkstalkers books. I had a heck of a time reliving these old games and they remain a joy to play.

This collection is way better than I had anticipated...
And don't get me wrong, I'm an old Darkstalkers fan and was excited the second they announced it, but I was not expecting as much love and care put into the package as there was. The killer menu music, the snappy menu layout, the online lobbies and matchmaking and rollback netcode, the museum and music included and the ability to matchmake while browsing the museum all make for a very satisfying package. As far as the games themselves, they're all '90s arcade misfit gems. You'll find yourself gravitating to some games over others depending on personal tastes, but there is a lot to love here for fans of fighting games. Vampire Saviour aka Darkstalkers 3 is by far my favorite of the bunch. It shockingly hasn't aged at all, and it's one of the most fun fighting games I've every played. The music absolutely slays, and even my brother who normally plays first person shooters was having so much fun that he wants to continue playing it. I could go on about the animation and art direction and all that. It's a 10/10 fighting game, and I'd probably purchase this for that game alone. But then you've got Red Earth and Pocket Gem Fighter and Puzzle Fighter and the ultimate version of Street Fighter II and Cyberbots and the rest of the Darkstalkers series. all in perfect arcade glory. I am going to be putting a lot of hours into this little cartridge. Please consider picking it up on your system of choice if you care at all about the possibility of seeing a new Darkstalkers game.

Brilliant collection
Darkstalkers is Capcom’s near-forgotten and wholly brilliant horror-themed fighting franchise. This collection is a tribute to that franchise and while i would have liked to see character bios and some more history, the museum has a load of artwork and music, so that’s swell.New features includes a save state, achievements, online play for ALL games and the game remembers your hi scores.Besides Darkstalkers you get the 15th anniversary edition of Street Fighter 2 as well as two other incredible games: Gem Fighter and SuperPuzzle Fighter. Gem fighter is chibi Street Fighter w Darkstalkers and Red Earth characters thrown in and is a load of fun and packed to the hilt with Capcom references. puzzle Fighter is a head to head puzzle game that shines in two player mode. The previously unreleased in the west, Red Earth is here and is an RPG crossed with a fighting game. It’s a boss rush and quite good with jaw-dropping visuals.Cyberbots.All games are available to play in their Japanese versions. This collection just rocks. Massive thumbs pointed skyward.Keep it squatch.

Includes Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
I give this a high score for having included Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. However, it could be much more clearly explained how to join a second player to the game (selecting P1 or P2 at the beginning does not do it; the + key in the player select screen seems to do it). Also, we both had a strange feeling that some keypresses are being intermittently lost (hard to prove it, unfortunately). Overall it has been a great addition to the library.

Not really made for 2 player vs mode
This game is great, it includes all the Darkstalkers games, street fighter puzzle fighter, etc. but the glaring thing that is missing to me is a 2 player vs mode where each person can choose a new fighter to use after a fight, instead the games are arcade games so whoever wins with a character is locked into that character and the other player is able to change who they want to play as but not the player who won. It’s a huge missed opportunity to not have a vs mode in this kind of game, because not everyone will want to keep fighting someone using the same character over and over. For a single player arcade experience though this is a great collection of games.

A fun collection of games.
Lots of fun two player games in this collection. As the name implies most are fighting games but it also has Puzzle Fighter, a color gem matching game that I enjoyed alot at the arcade as a kid. They look great for older games. Nostalgia factor is at a 10. Having fun playing this with the family.
