Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1

A True Poetic Soul Singer!
I must say that I loved "Who Is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds Vol.1", and I cannot wait until the day I get to treasure Vol. 2 whenever it's released. Jill Scott is truly amazing. I heard a little bit about her through her spoken word poetry, but it wasn't until she blew up the spot with The Roots all-time hip hop classic "You Got Me", that I truly realized the power of this poetic soul. Her album is like listening to the best in soul R&B and spoken word at the same time. It's a true musical treasure. Every lyric sounds as if it was written with the care of a poem, and Jill Scott's voice is truly mesmerizing. She truly uses her poetry writing skills in the creation of her song lyrics. People may try to compare her to Erykah Badu or Angie Stone, but Ms. Scott truly has her own style and flava! Her intro to the album is real cool, and simply states who she is: "A poet" who does music. She actually found her musical voices while singing a few verses of a spoken word poem to song, and she was astonished at how her singing voice affected her audience. She knew she had found a new powerful form of expression. I truly cherish every song on the album. Listening to this album is like being forever in the film "Love Jones", it has that vibe and atmosphere. You can immerse yourself in the music and just relax and let go while being enlightened to what she is expressing through her poetic thought."A Long Walk" is smooth, and symbolizes the beauty of the album. "Love Rain" reminds me of the last scene of "Love Jones". She must have watched that film a few times before writing this song. She even showcases her powerful spoken words skills throughout it. "Honey Molasses" is truly sweet. The bonus track "Try" and "Love Rain" the remix, the hidden track with mighty Mos Def is worth the album price alone. As a poet I truly admire Jill Scott's skills. To me she released the best R&B album of 2000. This album is something you will listen to years from now, and believe me it'll be a classic. Just imagine owning a copy of Billy Holiday's or Sarah Vaughan's first album. Jill Scott's Vol. 1 will be just like that years from now. It's been in my car cd changer since I bought it the first day of release, and I have no plans to replace it will something else anytime soon. If you love a true musical/artistic/poetic talent, then you'll truly adore Jill Scott. You can have the beauty, art and melodrama of a coffee house rhythm & blues singing/spoken word performance showcase all in the comfort of your home or car with this amazing album alone. God is Love!

3 years later it's just as fresh
Prior to buying this CD, I felt that the state of music, especially R&B/hip hop, was so abysmal that I had not purchased new works of music for several years. Instead, I explored works by artists from the 60s and 70s or bought reissues of stuff that I previously had on cassettes. I had pretty much given up on contemporary radio. But on a leap of faith and strong word of mouth three years ago, I took a chance and bought Who Is Jill Scott?Starting with the Jilltro, I knew that this was something special. This CD stayed in my player for months at a time and I never got tired of it. Finally, R&B/hip hop that was intelligent and adult and deviated from the standard of juvenile "sex you up/down" lyrics. Don't misunderstand, Jill sings of sex, most particularly in Exclusively, but it's sensual, witty and was obviously written with more than the beats or a video concept in mind.My favorite cuts on this CD change periodically but standouts include A Long Walk, The Way, Honey Molasses, Love Rain and Slowly, Surely. I've watched folks young as 10 (just skip over the racy stuff) to as old as 60 groove to this music. This brings to mind the music of the 70s when artists such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield were at their peak.I still think of lot of today's music in the R&B genre is garbage and dumbs down the audience, particularly what they play on the radio. But every once in a while a gem like this comes along and gives me hope that the situation will improve.

Jill Scott changed my life.
The first time I lost this album I was moving back to my home state after a bad breakup. The second time was moving from my apartment to the next. This time, I bought it as a download because I REFUSE to not have it in my playlist ANYMORE!When Jill Scott opens her mouth to sing I swear the sun comes out. I appreciate her for being a strong role model...and more importantly for making me feel like a total dweeb after meeting her at the 2012 Miami Jazz Festival. She was coming out of her trailer after the show. I walked out of another trailer so I could meet up with the rest of my friends and wanted to faint when I saw them standing around talking to her. As we stood around chatting a bit before scurrying off to catch our flights, she randomly turned to me and said, "...and to this girl right here sangin her face off!...". Just being honest, I don't remember much else after that because I was so star struck! Long story short, she agreed to take a picture together after my friends asked...maybe we will meet again. It would be super cool! All things considered, I should probably buy a couple more of these and give them to people who I know will appreciate the art too. (not that she needs it, but just because I love the music she makes and want everybody else to get with it or get lost. hehe)L'Renee[...]

Jill Scott
I can recall seeing Jill Scott on a late night TV show many years ago, either Arsenio..or no maybe Chris Rock! I can't recall but I remember saying wow that sister has her own nice style and I love her singing. I eagerly anticipated her debut album , after hearing her perform "Getting In The Way". I purchased the Cd, and was very happy with the entire Cd fro, start to finish! Jill has a sassy singing yet sweet singing style. I love the way that she combines both singing and spoken word! It sets her apart from many other singers! This is the kind of Cd you sit back and sip on a nice cool glass of wine, and just let the music take you away like Calgon..loI own a copy of this Cd in another state, and now reside elsewhere so I decided to purchase it again! Didn't want to even wait to go back to hometown to get the other one. I am happy with my purchase! If you are a fan of Neo-Soul or just good r&b soul music with a jazzy style pick this up asap! I love it! Can't express how much enough! It feeds the soul as good real music should!

This is Jill Scott
