You technically could, however it's best used over an open flame or in coals. Used on an electric stove likely won't yield an even temperature throughout.

The price is for one cast iron sandwich maker. The people who make them, C. Palmer Manufacturing Company, sells them on their website for $34.95 each (cast iron version) but they are presently out of stock. Not sure where you got the impression it is double the price unless you looked at the cast aluminum version that the company sells on their website for $15.95 each.
