Does this book teach letters, shapes, colors, or numbers? Or what are the main categories of words?

Are the batteries already in the toy? I'm giving this as a gift and the box says try me, but when I did, it doesn't work.

I ordered this book for my niece and when I touch the left pages the words does not get selected. Is this normal or I have been sent a defective piece
