Q: How does this item work it not getting dark lens

I had the same problem. They are supposed to work straight out of the package. I ended up returning them and ordered just the auto darkening lens to put in my helmet. You don't want to be welding without face protection you will end up burning your face and not realizing it.

Q: What size outer protective clear lens does it take ?

It does not take a clear lens. It is self darkening.

Q: can i look directly in the sun with these

Probably, but be careful. I’ve done it before with welding helmets to watch lunar eclipse with no issue but I have not tried it with these.
