I am very satisfied with this metal detector. Its detection depth and accuracy exceeded my expectations, especially in complex terrain. It can also be precisely adjusted to different environments and targets. In addition, the battery life of the device is also very strong, and it will not run out of power even if used for a long time. All in all, this metal detector is excellent in design, performance and ease of use. It is definitely a good product worth buying.

My Nokta Legend died a couple days ago. I have a bad MD habit, so while waiting I bought the Dr.Ötek MT-XR for $98, with same day delivery. I’m too old to use the included hand digger, but it’s very nice quality. I tried the wired headphones. They worked fine, but I quickly got sick of dealing with the wire and I can hear the speaker just fine.So the 1st day I gave the Dr.Ötek a good 7 hour test on several soccer fields. I found 51 coins: including a one-dollar coin, a British penny, a piece of soccer jewelry and 4 zipper pulls, plus 25 pieces of trash. Over 80 finds in total. I dug all targets detected, as the trash factor on these soccer fields was low. I used the “Jewelry” mode, which notches out iron targets only. While this performance is impressive for such a low-price detector, my average over the past couple months is to dig 50+ coins and over 100 targets in about 5 hours with my Nokta Legend.So the Dr.Ötek certainly works, but it is slow. And of course, there is no way for me to know what targets I may have missed. I got a lot of false signals, which I eventually learned to ignore. It seemed that the detector struggled with deeper targets, and it was hard to get a repeatable signal several times. Most of the finds I made were 1 to 4 inches deep, but the ground was dry and rock hard.You need to swing the Dr.Ötek low and slow and when you get a beep go back and forth very slowly over the potential target and make sure the signal repeats in two directions. Otherwise, DON’T dig it! It is essential that you also buy a handheld pin-pointer. Decent ones can be had for only $20, and this makes finding the target way easier. I always try to use my handheld pin-pointer on top of the ground first if the detector is indicating the target is shallow (0-3 inches). If your handheld pin-pointer can’t location of the target from the surface, then you can use the pin-pointer (“PP”) button on the Dr.Ötek. Go slow and cross the “X” where the sound of the PP is loudest, and the indicator shows all bars lit up. But if you move the detector and you get a strong signal for more than a few inches that is probably a good indicator that the target is something large, like an aluminum can. This PP function worked OK at best for me. It was fine on shallow targets, but I missed several deeper targets and had to enlarge my hole.This detector doesn’t have multiple frequencies. It uses a single 7 MHz frequency, which is fine for coins and jewelry. The recovery speed is very slow and there is no adjustment, so as I said above you have to go slow. The ability to notch out targets by ID range is very useful and generally most people will want to turn off iron targets between 1-40, but leave the rest. I found the target ID’s to generally be accurate. The quarters were right around 90, dimes and copper pennies around 80 and zinc pennies around 70. The dollar coin I found was a solid 94, which was right on. The one Nickle I found was a 45, again as expected.My only major complaint is that while the detector is reasonably lightweight and has a nice range of adjustments on the shaft it is very rickety and wobbles when you swing it (I may need to reinforce with some duct tape?). The other knock is that the Dr.Ötek isn’t rechargeable, uses 9 volt batteries and appears to eat one Battery about every 8-10 hours.So, while this is a major step backwards from my Nokta Legend, I can’t help but be impressed by the performance of this detector for a price point under $100. I would recommend it to anyone who isn’t sure if they would like metal detecting but wants to give it a try. Just make sure to also buy a $20 handheld Pin-Pointer. But if you’re pretty sure you will get into this fun hobby for the long term, then for a few hundred dollars more there are much higher performance detectors. You do get what you pay for!Addendum - Proof that this detector is slow and misses targets. I returned to the same site a month later with my new / repaired detector and found almost twice as many coins and a silver ring going over the same ground in about the same amount of time.
