MUST READ
I have never missed out on a book by Linda Rey, especially from this series and I'll continue devouring all her books, they're just that good! She knows how to bring out the emotions in a reader, and this book was no exception. I liked the "letter" form of the book, which added to the overall experience because hence it's name "Letters from Summer Camp", writing it in letter format made it that much more interesting. This book is great for a light read, if you want to get caught up in Willa's world as she navigates the hard life of summer camp.

A fun summer camp experience shared through letters home
Willa Shisbey is off to camp for five weeks over the summer, but instead of the Science Camp she was promised, she finds herself at Camp Mauch Chunk in Pennsylvania–a sports camp–instead. Being less than athletically inclined herself, Willa is shocked and dismayed at the reality she faces, especially as everyone else at camp seems to have a preternaturally high affinity for sports and athleticism. Through a series of letters home, Willa shares her fears and frustrations, and with time and tenacity, Willa ultimately discovers where she truly fits. This entertaining middle grade novel is written in a stream-of-consciousness style because of Willa's many letters penned to friends and family back home. Each letter is dated and timed, which gives readers a sense of how each day transforms Willa into a new character by the end of the book. Humor, heart, and honesty fill the pages of these letters, and each one connects readers to Willa in a different way. And because many readers share Willa's homesickness and nervousness in their own experiences, there is ample opportunity to empathize with Willa throughout the novel. The design of this story makes it accessible to middle grade readers, especially thanks to its use of familiar vernacular, ample white space, kid-friendly font, and frequent illustrations. While it is helpful to have read the other books in the series before this one because of references to events that came before, this novel can stand on its own in the right context. Fans of journal-style literature featuring quirky and often underappreciated protagonists will fall for Willa and the many moments that help her to grow. This is an excellent addition to both the Confessions of a Nerdy Girl series and library collections for middle grade readers.
