I live in a somewhat remote rural area, and in a house with a number of downstairs windows and doors. For security reasons, and following some minor thefts in other properties nearby, I needed either a full alarm system or individual alarms for windows and doors. I saw these, and thought I would give them a try. There are two parts to each alarm - the main alarm and a smaller, magnetised piece that fits on either the door/window or door/window frame. The parts are attached to window/door by the supplied double sided sticky patch (this is a surprisingly strong bonding sticky patch, and I have no doubt it will remain in place for some time). The two pieces of the alarm shoould be attached in such a way that there is a narrow gap between the two parts. To turn the alarm on one simply moves the side switch on the main alarm piece down as far as it will go. (Moving it half way down gives a single chime when the door/window is opened). To turn off the alarm simply close the window/door, or physically move the switch to the 'off' position. The alarm itself is quite loud (110 - 120 decibels - I have seen both quoted in literature and on the box! Whatever it is, it's loud!) This package, with 12 alarms for £50 (the price I paid) has turned out to be good value as far as meeting what I needed, the ease of installation and the noise each alarm makes when triggered; as such I can recommend them. (These are my own thoughts on an item I have bought myself and found useful.)

Initial impressions only. First thing to note - make sure you have a very small Phillips-head screwdriver for the battery case. If you have an eyeglass repair kit, it will work. Secondly, I bought this set specifically for the chime feature. I have varying needs for the door/window sensors from "this window should never be opened and will be alarm-setting only" to "this door is opened often and I just want a chime on it to alert me during the day." Very few sensors, even at higher price points, have the chime, so I can't be too picky, but it's LOUD and very high-pitched - it's less of a chime than a screech. It's a short blast of the alarm. Someone with average hearing will be able to *clearly* hear the chime from the other side of the house. When in the same room, it's too much. My plan to keep most of the sensors on chime during the day isn't going to work. I will give myself and my cats heart attacks every time the chime is activated; it's not the neutral "bong" I was expecting. Luckily, the switch to adjust the settings are easy to reach so you will just have to get in the habit of resetting it as needed. I'm not looking forward to testing each one as I install them, but, again, at this price point, it's a small inconvenience. Finally, each sensor requires 4 LR44 1.5v batteries. Go ahead and toss a bulk pack into your cart now while you are thinking about it. Another positive is the large battery test button on the front. It's easy to check if you need to replace the batteries, and the notification is a change in the light color, not an alarm.

These are life savers! When my husband and I moved we were in a not so safe area! We had someone break in through the back door one night and the alarm went off. It scared the guy away, these could have saved our lives. We no longer live in that location but we left them on all the windows and doors for the next people who moved in. They work well! They are very loud and can be heard from one side of a 1,500 sq ft home to another.

I would have given these a five-star rating if this hadn't happened: I bought the 12 pack, to have enough for all the windows. So I installed them all, the day they arrived. That night, at 5 a.m. the alarm on one of my bedroom windows went off. It's extremely loud, and extremely jarring, to say the least, when it happens when you're sound asleep. I stopped it, and reset it, and attempted to go back to sleep. At six O'clock it went off again. I turned it off and left it off. To be clear, the window had not been moved in the slightest. The next day I checked the batteries to make sure it wasn't simply a matter of weak batteries, but that wasn't the case. There's a button you press to check the batteries, and it lit up the tester light green. Having malfunctioned twice, and cost me several hours sleep, it went into the garbage can. It's not going to have another chance to do it again, and I'm certain it would have. I was just glad it happened to me, and not another member of the family, because it would have scared them out of their wits. So instead of a 12 pack, I got an 11 pack for my money. Consequently, I now have serious doubts about the other eleven. Are they eventually going to go off for no reason and scare the hell out of my family? Are they even going to work correctly, if there's an actual break-in attempt? Basically, I now have zero confidence in these. The best I can say is, they aren't very expensive, and they are loud enough to wake the dead. I thought of GE products as being well-made, but I won't be buying any more of their brand.
