Can I throw this in the washing machine?

I did, but the chin strap got twisted in the washer and now I really have to focus on putting it on when I do. Good enough tho.

No, I don't think so. I am 5'11" (180cm tall), 180 lbs, and it fits me well - on a 4.5 year old kid it would probably be huge.

how would you recommend cleaning it?

Hand washing is best and air drying. I ran it with my Gi in the washer once and it stripped some of the adhesive of the chinstrap cloth. The ear piece’s fabric glue also doesn’t hold well if your run it through your washer. Ever since I switched to hand washing, it’s remained the same way for the last few months.
