I bought this a few years ago for a lower level undergrad English class and amongst the mountain of overpriced, long forgotten text books, I find myself referring to this one time and time again for nearly all of my English classes.This book is a great tool for English majors, casual readers/writers or anyone who is looking to improve their written rhetoric skills.

My college professor recommended this to our class (sadly my senior year) and I wish somebody had told me about this sooner! I thought my writing was okay, but boy did this step it up! This book is definitely that every student needs to have in their arsenal. To me this book is the holy grail of academic writing aids.Buy this immediately.Buy the actual updated edition in literal book format. Do not buy kindle version.

It provided valuable insights into the dynamics of academic writing, making it easier to understand and apply the concepts. While it may not be extraordinary, it is certainly effective and useful for students aiming to improve their writing skills.

i enrolled into a college refresher English course and the instructor used this book to highlight and drive home better writing .. so i decided to buy the book and use it for the rest of my college experience... it has paid off for me in so many ways.... in the back there is a section where you can have quick access to all the helpful suggestions that they say i say provides..highly recommend.. especially if like me you just need a pretty way to spit out what you want to say..

The book itself is decent. It gets the general rules of how to write a good paper down. It's not dry, but it's not engaging either. If you need to learn the rules quick, it might be worth it, but if you're looking for something to keep as reference, this is not that book.There were quite a few errors with the pages, but customer service was very nice about the situation. The whole first chapter was gone and some of the chapters have double the pages, as in the pages 98-104 would be printed twice. I did contact customer service and they did what they could to help, which I appreciate.

It is honestly the best academic writing book I have ever read, and if I had known about it, I would have read it even if it wasn't required for the class.Written in a conversational manner so it is easy to read and doesn't feel like a textbook. The best thing about the book is that it tells you everything that well written essays contain(or any type of writing) that no one or professor explicitly talks about. It tells everything up front without you trying to constantly dig for the point. 5/5

It was exactly as stated and arrived on time. I needed it for my English class and the school bookstore didn't have anymore. They were going to have to order and I was going to have to go back to the college the next day. And being that this is an online course, was inconvenient. Checked on Amazon, it was a third of the price and I didn't have to leave my house. I will start checking Amazon for my textbooks in the future. Thanks Amazon Prime....your the best!!!!!

I use the first edition of this book to teach writing strategies for High school students and this second edition is even better with the many, many interesting and entertaining examples of great essay writing.

The underlying philosophy of this writing course is that we never write in a vacuum. Even when we do a most original work, we build upon something which many other creative minds wrote before us and paying due attention to what "they say" will make our task - "I say" - much easier. Keeping in mind the implicit dialogue between ourselves and the previous writers is very important.I have never had a writing course in my whole life, but I did have to write essays number of times for my degrees and it was excruciating. Now I am studying again and I want to be more efficient than last time. This book gave me precisely the tools I lacked. For every writing stage they suggest the concrete steps to take and also provide the templates one can use. The templates are set structures with dots in between to fill with phrases pertaining to my particular topic. This sounds like a solution for young students, but I am perfectly happy with this approach. It provides me with the elementary education I have never had. It is very clearly and systematically written, it goes step by step and it provides the templates as a way of articulating the discourse. Needless to say, one doesn't have to follow the steps or fill in the templates blindly, but the suggestions they bring help both practically and psychologically and cured me of most of my writing difficulties.The second part of the book consists of relevant, sometimes annotated essays which exemplify the points made in the first part. This is also a great help.
