Is it compatible with lego bricks?

Absolutely, Snap Circuits BRIC is compatible with Lego. You can combine it with all your Lego compatible bricks.

Is this basically a snap circuits set combined with Legos? I have the Jr set but don't want to waste my $ adding this one if there's overlap.

Yes and no. It is Snap Circuits with lego-type blocks, but it's also different. You cannot build the same types of projects with Legos plus SC Jr as you can with this set. It has fiber optic lights. Some of the Lego pieces also have parts that fit with the SC pieces--which you wouldn't get with just Legos. You can build "buildings" with this set that light up. It is fun, but I would say it's not as well made as the regular Snap Circuits. Some of the directions aren't as clear as regular SC. My son likes it, but it's not as easy to do alone.

would an 8 yr old soon to be 9 yr old who has never used snap circuits before understand this set ? or is it suggested a basic set first ?

Our son started with the snap circuits jr set at age 6/7, and is able to use the bric one at age 8. I think the other set is a good one to focus more on learning how to put the electric pieces together. The Brics definitely add another dimension too it.... literally. It’s taking the flat projects and making them 3D. But there are good detailed instructions for both sets. I find the Jr instructions easier to read and there are a lot more electrical projects (101 vs 26). However if your child LOVES LEGO, the Bric one is definitely great! If you end up with both in the long run it’s even better since they work together. (Ps. Sometimes pieces don’t work and the company will replace them!).

Is this set compatible with arduino?

Hello- The Snap Modules are compatible with Snapino ( www.amazon.com/dp/B06XC8T8GB/ ). Snapino includes an fully compatible Arduino Uno in the U31 module. You can use the Snapino U31 like you would any other Arduino Uno board.

Excellent for young minds

This is an excellent educational AND fun set for young minds. We have bought several different kits from this manufacturer, and all have been appreciated by the children who received them. The instructions are easy to follow and the results are rewarding to the child. And children can improvise with their own ideas once they've completed the formal projects. This particular set is compatible with LEGO, so kids can build more elaborate structures around the electronics, if they wish.
