Yep is the short answer. Needed it for the same reason for a waste water pipe that flows into the main drain line - smell was as you can imagine. Fitted one of these and haven't had an issue since.

Yes, mine is fitted vertically. Just make sure the arrow is in the direction of flow so gravity shuts it off if flow stops.

Can this be used in a bathroom to prevent back flow between shower and bath waste pipes?

I don’t think it will fit into domestic waste pipe as it’s designed for 40mm pipe (41) and domestic is more like 43mm. There are domestic types but these often need to be mounted vertically as gravity closure not spring, so take up a lot of height. Difficult problem.
