Good kit. I am new to working with leather. The kit has lots of thread and needles. The stitching punches weren’t making the holes very easily despite hammering down very hard. I sharpened the tips on a stone, but it still wasn’t punching holes easily. Finally, I got good results by marking the holes with the stitching punch and then hammering the individual holes through with the provided awl. I made a cover/sheath for my vintage drawknife.

Plenty of colored threads to choose from, and all are sturdy. The eye of the needles can be fragile if the hole you create in the leather isn’t wide enough for it, so it’s important NOT TO FORCE IT if it’s difficult to pass. Make the hole in the leather wider, then try again. If you have to use your entire arm strength and body to get the needle to pass, you risk damage to the needle. The needles are not weak themselves, they are good for a first time set. There are plenty of needles, tools in a variety of points- and my favorite so far are the curved needles. For repairing crappy work boots with this set, I’ve been able to save a lot of money. I would have had to drop $200 1 year ago, and now I’m still going strong thanks to this kit.

An excellent starter kit! I made moccasins for the first time & as it was a one-off project, I didn’t want to invest in more expensive tools. This had everything I needed and worked really well! I’m sure there are better products, but this did the job just fine for me. The coated thread never got stuck, the hole-making tool went right through my 2-3mm leather with one or two taps from my little hammer, the needles never bent & if I missed a hole, the awl worked perfectly to poke individual holes.

Love all of it except the punch with the crooked tines. Otherwise all Of the needles and thread and awls are a great deal. If you don’t need the multi-prong punch then this is an easy yes. Needed to repair a belt for the spouse and this was much cheaper than a new belt.
