Fun to color! - I seem to "collect" coloring books rather than actually use them, but getting this one tells me maybe I have been buying the wrong ones for my coloring tastes and passions. I couldn't wait to start coloring this one! I foresee a whole new collection of fashion color books! In fact, I may have to get another of this specific one to color them twice (Yes, I know I could make copies, but for "reasons" thats not happening here.) I thought I had a pretty good collection of colored pencils, but they seem to be more specific to nature coloring, and I can see from coloring in this book that I will have to expand my collection (about 85 colors combined from three brands). I am afraid it is an addiction ... ! I have enjoyed the Dover Coloring Books since long before "adult coloring" was a thing -- going back a good 25 years. These pages are artfully detailed, but not so much so that they are intimidating to color. The styles of both dresses and hairstyles/accessories are true to the time depicted (it's an area I've researched for costuming). Using this Godey's Fashions color book takes me back to a time I have only had the pleasure to read and dream about. I am loving the experience! Review: Nice quality book, especially for the price - I love coloring in color books, but I don't like having little kid ones. They lack details and lack designs that I am interested in. This book is really interesting, it has all sorts of fashion designs that are just lovely. I also use it for inspiration when drawing, outfits can be a little more difficult to come up with than characters, but I can pick the bodice from one and the skirt from another and draw an interesting picture. I like coloring when I am unwinding, it's calming and fun to experiment with color combinations. This book has a decent amount of pages to color, the paper is good weight, my pencils and even water color pencils have not gone through and the paper holds up to water (for painting) For the price, this book is fantastic! Some coloring books are as much as 6 or 7 times the amount of this one and not all have very many more pages.

Historic fashions = perfect for coloring
This coloring book starts with a short blurb about Lady's book (later Godey's Lady Book) aka who we can thank for these lovely images. Each page gives us information about the page we're coloring -- including the year that fashion appeared, the fabrics used, what the accents are, etc. While some adult coloring books require you to all but grab a magnifying glass for the details, this one is a bit kinder on the eyes. Some pages have almost no small areas leaving you to your own devices when it comes to just how much shading / sprucing up of the image you'd like to do. Or, alternatively, if you're in the mood for some of the more detailed challenges some pages do have fashions that will require you sharpen the colored pencils to a fine point before you start working on them. Some of the coloring books that are geared towards adults might not be as appropriate for kids, but this one is just fine for them. Really small kids would maybe have problems with the pages that have some of the finer details, but beyond that, there's no reason why kids of all ages couldn't color these pages. If you like Victorian fashion, history, and coloring then you won't want to miss this one.

This is my favorite
This is my favorite! Price is great. Highly recommended purchase. The drawings are very nicely done and the fashions are so pretty. There are 30 pages of drawings of women's fashions for time period 1838 to 1880. Most pages have 2 to 3 females in different outfits. There are only a few pages that have one female. The details are pretty and so are the faces; very cute and the eyes are very nice too. If someone prefers to have these pages enlarged, you will not lose any detail like you would find in some clip-art books. (I wish, however, that there was background detail for that time period, i.e. a garden, victorian house, etc). Each page also describes what they are wearing. Great way to get a quick "snapshot" of that time long long ago. (By the way, can you imagine dressing like that and having no air conditioning??). Victorian Houses (Dover Pictorial Archives) The Victorian House Coloring Book I recommend purchasing these two coloring books as well to go along with Godey's Fashions and Fashion Then and Now (Costumes for Coloring Series)

This is by far my Favorite coloring book.
This book cost $2.55. From some of the reviews I wasn't expecting much. One of the review claimed there was too much text and the pictures are too small. Yes there is text but I do enjoy reading the text and I ponder about the time period as I color. If you want to do much shading this is not necessarily the right book for you. There are tiny detail in several of the dresses. In my opinion this is a perfect coloring book for those who enjoy coloring, or those who are learning about shading faces and the folds of dresses and floweres. At the price I would buy a few copies. That's $2.55 including shipping!!!! Great deal! Actually, I have bought several coloring books this month and this is by far my favorite.

It's Okay, but...
I have become part of the newest fad for adults, coloring for relaxation and fun. I thought this might be an interesting diversion from the other relaxation books I have. I love the fashions and the fact that I can color them. What I don't like is that they are printed with designs on the reverse side of the page also. When you color, the color bleeds through on the next design. The details are so intricate that you can't use a crayon on most of them and must use a sharpie or very sharpened colored pencil. What I have done is to photocopy what I want to color but that takes a lot of fun out of having all the designs in one book. It is a nice book though.

I am really enjoying colouring these pictures. They are really detailed and the paper used is stout without any of the soak through that some other books have. Would highly recommend.

Lovely gowns, lots of detail and written discrimination of the gowns on each page, with the year the gowns were worn. Great book.

Ich bestelle regelmäßig Malbücher für meine Mutter, und dieses ist mal etwas anderes. Meiner Mutter gefallen die Vorlagen früherer Mode sehr gut.
