Very useful tool
First impression in-use: Really nice tool. I renovate (not flip) homes so I need fast, accurate measurements. As others have noted it cannot do decimal inches, nor can it do metric (m, cm etc). Aside from that limitation it works very nicely. Chief complaint would be the lack of a smoothing function to account for hand shake; but it does give exceptionally accurate readings and has a threaded base should you wish to use a tripod for stability. Fits nicely in the hand and is easy to use. The level functions also works well. I haven't used bluetooth connectivity yet, but will update when I have done so. Outdoors, over longer distances, the obvious limitations apply; harsh, bright light without shadow becomes a problem over 30 feet, as does holding the device steady enough to get a solid reading; using the (provided) targets and a tripod I was able to get accurate 40 yard measurements (haven't tried further yet) under Arizona sun. Indoors was perfect. The longest uninterrupted run in our house is 69 feet. During daytime measurements the device, handheld and without using targets, had no problem continuously calculating the internal dimensions of our house. The laser is quite bright (although rated at <1mW) and the device does draws a considerable amount of power; so don't expect the batteries to last long in continuous use. I'd say this is primarily a handyman's/hobbyist's tool but that just an opinion - to me this tool is invaluable and I only wish I'd bought one earlier.

Love it so much I bought one for my dad! And he loves it, too!
It doesn't replace a tape measure, but this is the household tool you never knew you needed. Standalone this is a great product. Small, lightweight, doesn't drain batteries too bad between uses, rugged and boxy enough to serve its purpose, and comes with a carrying case that protects the optics. Throw in the Bluetooth with the smartphone app and it can be a serious time-saver, and I'm delighted to say that the Bluetooth is very easy to set up and work with. Pairing is done with the Bluetooth button, not buried in a menu somewhere. The Android app isn't perfect, but it gets the job done well enough for me at least. Primarily, I use it to super-impose measurements onto a photo, something I had to use my Microsoft Surface to do in the past. This function works great as long as you're capturing from the device, and you can even employ min-max operations for more advanced measurements. If you're typing in measurements manually on the app it gets awkward, but still feasible. I love how you can organize measurements by project and label the pictures. I find myself referencing old measurements surprisingly often. Works well enough outdoors as well, though I don't think it would be powerful enough to use in direct sunlight. I've used it to measure out rooms and their features (windows, doors, etc.) and to figure out how long of a garden hose I'd need to buy to reach the corner of my yard. My dad was grateful he could use this to measure the height of his 18' ceiling. Highly recommended product!

Compared to Leica Disto A8, excellent...
I lost my years old, dependable Leica Disto A8. I think I buried it in a wall somewhere. But despite the Leica's outrageous price (I'm unsure how much I paid for it, but I see it listed at $500), it was far from perfect. By contrast, this little Bosch unit is a fraction of the cost, and addresses some of my standing complaints about the Leica. Primarily, the GLM 50 has an awesome, easy to read display. I'm not sure if it's backlit LCD, or OLED, but no matter -- the high contrast white on blue is legible in bright sunlight, dark basements, tilted sideways, whatever... without squinting! Contrast this to the small digits displayed by my A8, dark gray on a grayish/green screen, with a manual (and not very effective) backlight button. Also, this unit is square. It sounds like a "no duh" observation, but the A8 has an ever-so-slightly off-square bottom edge that meant when I set it on a floor to shoot the ceiling, I'd have to manually tilt the unit just a tiny bit to get a straight shot. This Bosch goes a step further and includes a level indicator on the display, so there's no guessing whether the unit is oriented correctly. The A8 has a handy camera viewfinder feature that allows visual targeting in situation where the laser dot can't be seen (long distance, outdoor). That's missing from the Bosch unit, though it isn't a feature I used much. In contrast, the Bosch gives me the Bluetooth connectivity to an Android app, but again, I haven't seen fit to use it yet. The one feature I did use from time to time on the Leica that's missing from the Bosch is a timer, which would allow me to set up my shot without worrying about jiggle from the button press. I'll just have to make do without it, but it seems that Bosch could have easily thrown that in as a menu option without any extra effort. Speaking of the menu, the operation of the GLM 50 is fantastic. All features are available with the press of a function button, in a "wheel" type menu. Each function is accompanied by a graphical depiction of the intended usage on the display, resulting in a relatively intuitive operation without referring to the user guide. All in all, Bosch gave us a really good unit here, that despite the low price, doesn't much sacrifice in features, and excels in usage.

I looked at this as well as the Leica. The leica has the functionally to hold the device on an outside wall, but it is also $70 more. I think I can hold the bocsh to an outside corner good enough. I also extensively looked at both free apps. The Leica app was very basic and would work well for one room with no rooms within a room or windows, doors, other objects. I tested it on my phone. Both apps have difficulty exporting pdf with short walls as both overwrite other measurements. I tried out the Bosch on an tablet and on a phone. The Bosch has two modes, sketch and detailed. If you are on a tablet, only using the detailed is the way to go if you have multiple rooms. the bosch has a few key features that i liked: When you roughly draw a room, both apps scale the walls. For the bosch, when you actually enter a reading, it will show you the original drawn length and the actual reading. this is a handy sanity check. The lieca app does this as well by changing the line from dashed to solid but does not show both the estimate and the actual. Both apps scale base on what you put in, but this is where the bosch app comes out on top, the Leica will alter angles based on measurements. You may say to yourself, whats wrong with that. well nothing is always 90 degrees, but the plan looks better to keep everything at 90,45,30. You can adjust it in the bosch app as well, but if you put in the readings and make it bigger(if you choose), it will not autoscale. this is also nice for short walls for readability. drawing a one ft by on ft wall is no fun on a phone, but you can draw it as 3'x3' and then take the readings as 1'x1' and then make it larger again. The bosch allows you to lock the dimension of one wall and then alter attached walls together (for instance to make a room larger People complain about when you convert the scketch to detailed plan, it moves the measurements to the outside walls. This is true, but if you have room within the building, such as a bathroom or bedroom, which are you measuring? probably you actual measure both if their are adjacent rooms. So if you want to use the sketch, you approximate the walls, then convert to detailed plan, and then take measurements. Boash sketch also does not do 45s but the lecia does. The sketch app on both leica and bosch are limited, windows and doors are not the simplest I found for those that want to properly sketch out a room, teleposts, rooms in a room, the bosch app is the only one which will. This is where the bosch app also comes in handy. need to measure to something else other than a wall in a room, such as a post or a furnace? The bosch app has a dimension line which you can put where ever you want, so it you have a post in the midddle of the room, you can either put a label on with "post" and then add a dimension line, and take a reading. For windows and doors, the bosch app shows you a vertical view and you can then take measurements from wall to window, window H or W, distance from other wall, and height. The export then shows you walls with windows and doors. it is quite nice. The Leica app does not seem to export window size There was another complaint on here about changing modes. To me, I just keep the mode in realtime and if I just want to take and hold the reading, I press the red button. Fairly simple, so I'm not sure what the problem he had. The only real gripes I have are: 1. If using on your phone and using the detailed plan, it is hard to snap properly. I did not have this problem with the tablet. So for the phone, sketch first(if you want), convert to detailed, add in windows, doors, and any oddball walls, and then take measurements 2.Measurements are not able to be rounded to a chosen accuracy. for framing and room dimensions for drawings i just need to the 0.5" . leica seems to have this problem as well 3. when you have a wall, it takes 4 taps to take a measurement (1. to select inside or outside2. one to select the bosch (as opposed to entering a value) 3. to remotely turn the on the laser from the app, 4. take the measurement). it should be 3 steps Neither of the apps have a concept of "display accuracy". Lieca seems to be going the way of pay to play for anything beyond their simples sketch. I'm not a fan of paying monthly fees. IMHO when comparing the two free apps, bosch comes out on top, but is best used with a tablet. So i'm going to buy a $120 tablet. So for $240 I get the device, the app and a tablet, compare to the leica which is $210 For the devices themselves, if you do not need the flip feature on the leica, bosch has a couple extra features, holds 30 measurements in memory (these also show in a list in the app when you go to the wall measurement, which means you can take a measurement before or after you draw a wall) Lieca has 10. This is good in case later you realize something went wrong, at least you have the measurements to check. Bosch also has a level and angle measurement. level I might use, angle from horizon, probably not, The only thing I could see this useful for is stairs, but even then it would be tricky to measure without a target offset or outside stringer The bosch device itself does not have a "display accuracy" so it displays down to the 32 of an inch. This would be my only gripe with the device, which others have also complained about

Great little device, sometimes a bit slow, works well enough in daylight. Bluetooth logging to Excel is handy, trying to log into a plan a bit fiddly if not using a tablet.
