Tamiya Models German Panther Ausf.D Separate Track Link Set (1/35 Scale)

Put together before painting!!!
Purchased these track links mainly because they have the hollowed out guide teeth as seen on the actual German WWII Panther D. I think the hollowed out guide teeth are much more authentic looking than the rubber band track shoes as provided in the Panther D kit. This kit is of the "link-n-length" style track shoes - meaning that you must assemble each and every shoe. These tracks shoes come in 2 pieces - you MUST glue the hollow guide teeth to the track shoe (easy enough). Once I had everything glued together, I made the mistake of pre-painting ALL my track shoes before final assembly (BIG mistake). Each track shoe has 2 tiny holes and 2 tiny pins. The pins are to be inserted into the holes at a slight angle and then everything just "clicks" together. IF you hear a slight "click", then you know that you assembled the shoes properly to each other (but not always hear the "click").However, since I pre-painted my track shoes, paint got into some of those tiny holes and clogged them beyond cleaning which made assembly just a bit more difficult (I had pre-painted them then set aside for a few weeks before assembly). Also, paint built up around those pins as well and added to the problems of assembly. Also, some of those pins actually broke off as well when I was forcing the shoes together. I really did not inspect the kit thoroughly when I received it, so the "DUH!!! factor" is on me. Plus, this was my very 1st "click" together style track shoes from any manufacturer, so did not have the prior experience. Now I know what to expect with a few other Tamiya tank kits that I have that use these types of "click" together track shoes "DUH!!! DUH!!!Those pieces I was able to assemble correctly looked just AWESOME, + they were also moveable, thus making attachment to tank kit much more easier. Unfortunately, I realized my mistake of pre-painting way too late; became frustrated; and destroyed most of what I had built. Eventually went with the kit's rubber band tracks (which look great as well but do not have the hollowed out guide teeth). Had I took my time during assembly once I realized mistake, the final outcome would have been acceptable.Anyway, hope this essay helps out other as to avoiding my mistakes. Ordered via Amazon and shipped from Japan. Kit arrived well in advance of promised due date. Box was slightly crushed, but NO damage to product. Due suggest assembly BEFORE painting. Gets the 4 stars mainly because some of those tiny pins may break off during assembly - not a lot, but some no matter how careful. Remember that this is a plastic model kit and assembly is required. Paint/glue not included.

must have
Out of all the track links I had maybe two that failed to go together. A lot easier to assemble than resin tracks. My only complaint are the large ejector pin marks. Every link needed sanded down. These tracks are definitely workable, and feel pretty robust after assembly. Unlike resin tracks I’ve worked with, these don’t feel like they’d come apart during handling.

Great Looking Tracks for Tamiya ausf A
Used this on my 1/35 Tamiya ausf A and they fit well. Requires 85 links per track which leaves you 10 track links left over to replace the ugly individual kit links that are hanging on the side of the tank hull. Don't know how authentic these tracks are to the ausf A but in my opinion they look great with a nice sag on top. Easy to assemble however you need to be careful when snapping together as the little pins can get sheared off. Since my I'm displaying a static model, I glued most of the track links together so not a problem for me.

Tamiya - Please make these for your Tigers and Panzer IV's!!!
I love these tracks! Just got them today and have put some together. They look very realistic and were quite easy to put together. Just glue on the guide horns and snap the links together. I have not tried painting them yet, but they are awesome so far!

Tamiya tracks for Tamiya Panther Ausf D
Nicely molded replacement for the kit tracks. Much less expensive than other after market tracks.

Not easy to assemble
These links have very good detail and once completed look very good, but... they are very tedious to assemble. Firstly, the guide horns keep coming unstuck, no matter how much glue you dare to use without damaging the track link. Then the links themselves are difficult to connect and some will need to be glued as the small recces that allows you to click them together is easily broken. You'll need some patience to arrive at the finished article. The number of links you'll need for each track is higher than the instructions tell you. So be very careful not to damage any links or guide horns as you won't have many spares to use. I would advise cementing the guide horns to links while still connected to their sprue. Then remove them and connect up in small batches. Be very careful with the direction of the guide horns by the way, as it's very easy to fit them facing the wrong way. All in all, very disappointing for a new product from Tamiya. I hope this review helps those who purchase these links as an upgrade for the vinyl tracks that come with the kit. Like I said, they do look great when completed but are very tedious to assemble correctly.
