A terrific read
Here, Robert Scali hits a home run with this training manual, presenting a complex subject with an authority and simplicity so individuals desiring to enter into the close protection field can do so with confidence and a grasp of the fundamentals. Each chapter introduces the reader to a compendium of sound advice and common sense not found in the many other books on this subject. If the reader remembers to keep a low profile and not draw attention to the protective detail and principle, they will have come away learning one of the most important points, because when a protective detail goes defensive, something has gone terribly wrong. So if you're looking to shoot things up, then this line of work is probably not for you.Having served in the combat arms and worked in close protection, I purchased this book to stay abreast of what is happening in this field, even though I have since transitioned to another line of work. There is a wealth of information to be gained in this close protection manual, as opposed to Hollywood depictions of bodyguards. This manual reflects sound tactics and their application to a variety of changing situations. The only criticism is the formatting, as words in sentences are sometimes bunched together. But that's minor stuff considering the book's depth and how it transitions effortlessly from one subject to the next, without ever losing focus. This is a great read and likely to become an authoritative reference on the subject of close protection.

A great overview for those interested on close protection or wanting to hire those who provide the service
The book is a great one stop shop to highlight the multiple issues with regards to close protection and personal security. Bob Scali has a great amount of experience, which shows throughout the book based on the large amount of info covered with very specific detail given by topic. The chapters/topics were very detailed and there was definitely plenty of information for any reader. There was actually very little not covered at least on an introductory level, with enough detail to be useful in day to day situations. Most of the topics gave ample detail to engage the reader. My favorite topics were the close defense tactics specifically knife fighting and defense. Some of the other subjects covered were: environment, planning/evaluating, personnel issues – pros/cons, weapons, general and specific tactics, and equipment both military and civilian.I would recommend this book for the interested individual who desires a look into the issues of close protection and personal security. It is also a good quick reference for anyone who is contemplating or has hired a company or individual to perform close protection. It will give you a good overall reference to ensure the basics are covered by those you have hired for your own close protection.Ken H

Good Book for reference and advice on protection
This book gives good information and idea's in many scenarios. I particularly like the fact that the author emphasizes that it is always better to deescalate a situation rather than letting your ego get in the way. That being said, you still have to do what you have to do to protect another. It's worth keeping the book on hand for reference because there are many situations that are just as relevant to personal protection as it is to protection of others. I really would give the book 4.5 stars.

Great Read for an amateur.
Having little experience in the field of close force protection, I found this book to be invaluable. It presented a complex (and dangerous) subject/field in a complete and yet accessible way for a newbie like me. I found the writing style interesting but the subject matter compelling. It was a great read and well worth the time for anyone who wants to peak behind the curtain of this world. I strongly recommend anyone with an interest in this field take a look. You won’t be disappointed.

Great Value (700+ pgs) Good reference by topic or read through and study.
This book was a pleasant surprise. Worth reading straight through or using as a reference per topic. It conveys a lot of material related to personal security and protection of others professionally that can easily be transferred to home and family safety. The sample doesn't go beyond the table of contents because so much is covered, including personal protection, protection of others individually or in a team, family protection, weapons use, hand to hand combat, field first-aid and many other aspects of providing protection or operating within a security environment. There are over 700 pages of material so at times the author does seem to go on but considering what is being conveyed it is a better job then when authors or publishers clearly divide up material to sell more books on a topic that could easily be covered in one larger book.

Solid Material...Waay Too Many Typos
The material is presented in an engaging and concise way; however Kindle version is just plagued with typos, this undermines the quality of the information. Another thing that I notice is that the author refers to the person being protected as "principle" instead of "principal", don't know if on purpose or is just another typo.

Typos and formatting errors ruin it
The information in this book is quite good, but the glaring typos and formatting errors are unforgivable in a paid product. I struggled to get beyond the second chapter as the errors were so distracting that it detracted from the synthesis of information and enjoyability of the read. Wait for an improved edition to be released.

Unconventional Manual
Written from the view of an agent in charge. The books gives some insights on the topics with a lot of valuable tips from basic to advanced understanding. I wished the photo material would have been better. There some clear instructions on how to and how not to do mixed with some personal annecdotes of the author. What I like is that the author stripped the Hollywood crap out of the business and brought the things down on how some things really works, for example why not to use Red Dots. Well done. A comprehensive work of 700 pages. One has to built a system/syllabus on her/himself on the given information to make it work. Unbeatable price for the wealth of info.
