Cursive Writing Practice: Jokes & Riddles

A fun way to reinforce and improve cursive writing skills!
My third grader LOVES these riddles! They make daily cursive fun, instead of work. If this had a page printout of the upper and lower letters with arrows, it would be perfect. Without arrows, the student will have to learn correct letter formation somewhere else. The book format:-- Uppercase Letter page (no arrows)-- Lowercase Letter page (no arrows)-- 40 Riddle pages with three words to copy, then a riddle and answer to copy-- All practice pages include a tip for improving your cursive (like checking slant, letter shape, etc.)This is a reproducible book designed for teachers. It is meant to be photocopied! I've noticed that the lines for writing the riddle photocopy pretty light, so be sure to adjust your printer settings to a bit darker than normal. If you are looking for lots of individual letter practice, you might try Evan Moor's Daily Handwriting Practice: Contemporary Cursive instead. Daily Handwriting Practice has much more individual letter practice at the start of the book. We use both books daily. My daughter's favorite is definitely this riddle book! However, we did use a dry erase cursive board first. It had all the arrows as well as beginning points and ending points to show letter formation. After she knew how to form the letters correctly, we moved to colored pens and cursive practice books.

Quick practice that is fun to complete.
Because these riddles are so enjoyable, my son does not fight me to do his cursive practice. There are two riddles per lesson. One riddle is offered in cursive so the student practices reading cursive and then copying the text in cursive. The other riddle is in print form and so the student is challenged to rewrite the text in cursive. I wasn't offering my son daily cursive practice when I hoped to use the internet for daily cursive inspiration. Having this book at arm's reach has made it simple enough for me to actually offer daily cursive practice. It does not take long to complete each lesson but the frequent practice has help my son improve tremendously!

Good cursive writing book for kids that already know their cursive letters well. There is not any repetition of letters to give them work to build their skill. I was hoping the beginning of the book would have some pages with faint or dotted cursive letters to practice each letter before going into sentence writing. If your child knows their cursive letter fairly well then this will be a great practice book for cursive sentence writing. Plus the jokes might motivate them some to continue to the next page.

Our public school no longer teaches it because they are mandated to follow the garbage curriculum in accordance with Common Core
I wanted my daughter to learn to write in cursive. Our public school no longer teaches it because they are mandated to follow the garbage curriculum in accordance with Common Core/Smarter Balanced. But I digress. This is a great book to teach cursive. The jokes held my daughter's interest and the instructions were so easy to follow that it did not require me to supervise or "teach" the material myself. She actually asked to do her writing workbook...unheard of!! I highly recommend this for any parent who wants to teach this valuable skill to their child.

Narrow ruled lines
I like the writing style and content but was expecting wider lines for a product labeled for as young as 2nd grade.

Love it, love it!
My granddaughter is delighted with this bookI I got it for her because it kills two birds with one stone: she loves riddles AND, at eight years old, has been trying to teach herself cursive writing since it is no longer taught in school. Given that my handwriting is my only claim to artistry (my doodling consists of writing out alphabets), I am really pleased to see that, without any encouragement in that direction, she has gravitated toward calligraphy on her own. This book is just perfect for her. I recommend it.

If you are getting this for fun practice and laughing -- reconsider
This book is a fine practice book. Two things to note is it is practice for those who have already been introduced and understand how to write cursive. I loved handwriting without tears for teaching cursive and my son loved doing it.This book my son does not enjoy it. The jokes are really not funny :( I wanted to hear him laughing and I have not once. It is fine for practice, but not that much fun. I am a homeschooler, so I have him practicing in his English assignments and spelling work. The book becomes redudant practice and there is no pay off with a laugh.

Good Practice for my 4th Grader
I like this book because it gives him good practice writing his cursive while being somewhat enjoyable due to the jokes and riddles. What I don't like as much is the fact that the space provided for writing is quite a bit smaller than what he is used to at school. The entire writing space is about 3/8" or slightly less than 1 cm. I suppose it is okay though, as he will need to learn to write on notebook lines which are even smaller.

Cursive Writing Practice: Jokes and Riddles
This was ideal for my 8 year old daughter who was still struggling with consistently using cursive handwriting, and was extremely reluctant to practice and do yet another handwriting book during this Summer holiday! She really liked the jokes, and the fact that the length wasn't too daunting for copying out. One joke is shown in the cursive script which can be copied and another is in plain font which can be written out below the first joke. This meant she had different skills to practise on each page, as well as increasing her repertoire of jokes. Also, the pages can then be taken out to make a joke book - an additional motivation for keeping it neat.Would have preferred the standard script taught in British schools, but although some of the American letter forms are much 'curlier', and we do not use or teach the 'r' in the same way, my daughter was easily able to adapt to using the standard letter forms (especially with the 'r' and certain capital letters) that she knew, and she actually loved learning what seemed a more sophisticated style, using lots of loops. She has now returned to school feeling much more confident about her handwriting - both the look and speed. I would definitely recommend this book.

Fantastic incentive for handwriting
I have just bought this for my 9 year old (almost 10 though) daughter. She holds the pen incorrectly and forms some words poorly. The book is American and rather curly especially the capitals. So I re-wrote those capitals on sticky labels and stuck them over the original ones. The idea of having something of interest to take in to school and show to her friends as well as impressing her teachers has worked a treat. Thoroughly recommended. She practiced every day during a two week school holiday!

It's ok
it is good, but the capital letters are not what i wanted , but we ignore those and just write out the funny jokes etc. I would recommend.
