Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course Lesson Book, Bk 3

In teaching both Beginning and Advanced Piano at a college, I've been using Alfred's Basic Adult Course Lesson books for a number of years and both my students and I are very happy with them. The way material is presented, beginning with Book 1 for beginners, is logically presented and easy to understand with excellent and fun examples illustrating each next concept for students to play. I use this series in teaching both college students and older adults and everyone is pleased and learns easily. One important aspect to highlight is that from early on in the beginning, students are learning/using both the treble and bass clef and very quickly playing with both hands. I also find it helpful that elements of music theory are also included as part of the thorough education provided in this series. As a long time teacher of piano and music educator, I highly recommend this series.

Decades on, it's still an outstanding piano lesson book. It suits people with a fair amount of knowledge about music as it's not as detailed in explaining music concepts as other piano lesson books, and if you don't, you need an instructor to help understand in order to play effectively.

I like this piano course a lot. My only complaint is that, while level 1 comes with a ring binder so it's easy to use, levels 2 and 3 are the kind that don't want to stay open. I've solved the problem with clips like you use to close your bag of Doritos if you have the self restraint to not finish it in one setting. But I want to emphasize Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course is an easy and fun way to learn to play. In fact, I'm going to change my 4 star to a 5 star rating because my problem with the binding is too nit-picky compared to the benefits of learning to play at my advanced age of 68.

I really like Alfred's books, not all songs are very entertaining however they all lead to a better command of the keyboard in a well-thought-through way. On top of that, there is lots of videos on youtube of players showing what the tunes should sound like. Some of them are very pleasant to the ear indeed. In the book you can also find explanations of various sheet signs, keys etc. Highly recommended.
