The Ghost-Eye Tree (Owlet Book)

Family, courage, everyday adventure
A great book about finding courage when you're feeling overwhelmed by the unknown. I'd definitely recommend this to young kids with a brother or sister they spend a lot of time with. I thought the author did a great job depicting the tenderness we take for granted in our siblings banter.Illustrations are SPOOKY and muted and gorgeous. They really look like a dark niggt in the heartland and there are plenty of details to discover on second and third and hundredth readings. Finally I wanted to mention this is not a Halloween book. It's set in chilly weather and is a perfect book for the somewhat morbid child who LOVES being slightly spooked, the kind of kid who can look at just a tree and say "there's something spooky about that one".

Great for reading to your kids
This book scared the crap out of my daughter when she was young. We read the book to her many times, and she wanted to hear it over and over again. We found a dead tree that looked like it was used for the book, and we would make it a point to slow down when we passed by it in the car, especially at night (weren't we terrible parents). She's grown up now, but we bought another copy to give to her as a birthday present. She laughs about it now, one of the great memories of her childhood....

Fun and Spooky
My 6 year old grandson has loved this book since he was 5. He always wants me to read it to him when we Skype, so I decided to send it to him for Halloween. It has references to character's that are out of date, so they aren't well known, but the references are easily understood. The only thing I don't really like about the book is the use of the word 'stupid'. They use it rather freely, but this book was written in a time period where that wasn't as significant.

This book uses inappropriate language!
I agree with another reviewer. This book uses language like "dumb" and "stupid" that I do not want to repeat while reading to my young grandchildren. It wasn't even a good story. Believe me, you shouldn't buy this book. I returned it for a refund!

Favorite scary book
This book was a favorite of my children when they were small. We checked it out from the library one day and after that they wanted to check it out every time we went to the library so we finally just purchased our own copy. This Halloween I purchased copies for my grandchildren. I knew the grandchildren would love it and that it would be a fun childhood memory for their parents to share with them.

Superb writing and illustration... perfect spooky mood
This book is well written and superbly illustrated, as perfect a match of word tone and illustration as you can find. My 3 year old daughter quite enjoys the spooky mood, the scary ghost-eye tree, and the haunting refrain, "Oooo... I dreaded to go... I dreaded the tree... Why does Mama always choose me when the night is so dark and the mind runs free?" This is a year-round book, not just for the Halloween season. In response to the reviewer who says the language is harsh, I can agree with that although let me add that it is rather realistic (although not to be encouraged) given the ages of the sister and brother in the book. My remedy is that when the sister says, "stupid," I instead read aloud the word "silly" in its place. We also greatly enjoy the book Barn Dance by the same group of authors/illustrators. Barn Dance is different in that it has an actual supernatural element and is less a spooky book and more a book of wonder/imagination with a touch of friendly spookiness.
