Don't Label Me: An Incredible Conversation for Divided Times

Very Disappointing
Very disappointing. Her anti-Trump rhetoric belies her own biases and inability to not cast labels herself. I don’t get the sense that she wants to unite a divided country, only that she wants the left to scrutinize how they present their positions in order to convert more conservative individuals to adapt more liberally inspired values. Seems more an effort at coecion than understanding. I gave it two stars because there is some very quotable material, but I can’t help feeling so very disappointed that the author felt it necessary to join mainstream media in a neverending effort to paint a very one-sided and biased account of conservative values and activism. And the dog stuff - barely tolerable - seems silly to tackle such divisive issues in such an immature way.

Disappointed
The title is great and I heard the author briefly on NPR, which attracted me to the book. But the dog thing and the way she seemed to just write whatever came to mind made the book barely tolerable for me to read. It felt like a first draft, honestly. I don't know how the publisher agreed to print this book as is. With some shaping, and taking out conversations with her dog, it could make a nice long essay. Or a series of topical essays. I do not recommend this book.

Such a critical subject matter - but a bit difficult to read
Absolutely enjoyed so much of what she touches on in the book. A lot of what she writes needs to be read twice because it is so powerful. Sad to say (as a dog lover) that the way the book is written is just too corny. It was difficult to follow some parts because it is written like she is conversing with her dog - ugh! I would have enjoyed it so much more if she just wrote to us as adults. Maybe a second book - in memory of her dog - more directly written. Certainly 5 stars for overall content and a 1 star for organization. As a professor, I think all academics should have to read this book (or better yet listen to an interview with her - to avoid the back and forth between her and her dog) before they are allowed to step into a classroom.

Listen and learn
Ms Manji sets forth a powerful way to address what divides us from one another. She doesn't shy away from how difficult it is to overcome our inclinations to assign labels and make assumptions , but she illuminates a way to do exactly that. Her approach can help us all to accomplish the coming together for which there is such longing today.

Disappointed with labels in book about tolerance
Profoundly disappointed in this book.. saw her speak about this subject got me interested ... this book is written by someone who clearly sees herself as tolerant of others beliefs but labels voters who voted for Trump “Trump sympathizers”? Seriously? That is completely insulting from someone who is speaking about tolerance! And the talking to her dog thing.. annoying .. I really tried to get thru this book but her condescending tone make it impossible.

This is wonderful book
I found this book enlightening - It changed me, at a core level. Please, all people, all "Labels" read this book. I finished it the same day I saw the documentary "Apollo 11." Both gave me hope.
