Not a great message.
I didn’t care for the story. I wanted something to give my daughter some confidence going into kindergarten. But the story is of a girl that gets made fun of because of her name for 90% of the book. Then a new teacher starts with a similar name and then all of a sudden the other kids think she’s cool. This gives no coping skills on how to handle mean kids or give kids a confidence boost as I thought it would have. It actually seemed to make my kid more nervous because the whole book seemed to focus on mean kids.

Must Have!
I love this book, I remember having it read to me as a child. My daughter has a unique name and is starting school in the fall. I was looking for something that she could relate to. This is a fantastic book but definitely way too long for my four year old to keep interest. I am going to save this book for next year when shes a little older. The recommended age shows 4-8 years however I think this book is a little too long to keep a 4 year Olds short attention span.

Passing this on to my little girl
I *loved* this book as a little girl. How I wished my name was Chrysanthemum! I bought this for my 3 year old, she is advanced for her age and gets really engaged with the longer stories. This books keeps her attention span the entire time. I loved the illustrations as a child, and now so does my child. The only the I would say is that at 3 years old, she was a little afraid of the illustration where Chrysanthemum has a nightmare. But that has nothing to do with the story itself and everything to do with her age. I didn’t find the message of the story out of date 25 years later. It opens up a conversation about bullying and why some kids may bully - fear of the unknown or something that is unique or different. It also gave an example of how to ally for someone else who is being bullied (in this case the music teacher was an ally for Chrysanthemum and made her feel not alone). There are so many different aspects to bullying to be learned and I don’t know it’s reasonable for one storybook to cover them all.

Childhood Memories
I remember reading this book in the school library over and over again when I was little, and I even did a school project on it! 'Chrysanthemum' is a lovely book with creative illustrations that I was able to relate to as a child. The main character, Chrysanthemum, goes to school for the first time and learns that her name is a lot different than the other kids, and she struggles with learning how to accept it until she meets someone with another unique name! This book is great at demonstrating that sometimes there are people around you that are much more similar to you than you realize, and accepting yourself is something that we all have to learn how to do. This is one of my favorite books and I was so happy to have found it again.

Teacher size
So I bought this, thinking it was the normal sized book. I used to read the hard book version of this all the time as a child. I could not find the copy my parents had when I was moving out because it helped me so much with bullies and I wanted it for my future child one day. When I got it I was laughing so hard at myself and thankfully someone at my parents church said she had the normal size and would love to switch so she could read to her kids at school. But this is a great buy for teachers!

Chrysanthemum...Chrysanthemum...Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemum is a sweet and unforgettable story about mouse with, according to her parents, an absolutely perfect name. When she starts school however, she is teased about her long name. This story is a great read aloud for teachers to read when building a classroom community. This book teaches kids about kindness and embracing everyone’s unique differences. A classic and a must read!

Everyone is special
I love the charming characters, the colorful and cute illustrations. My daughter had this book since she was 7, she is now 32. I wanted to give my granddaughter her own copy. It was written in 1991 but still so identifiable with todays society. You could say this story has a little bullying in it but the teacher handles the situation in a very witty way. The book is sure to delight any child age 4 and up, adults too!!!!

Excellent book
This is one of my favorite books! It is about a little girl who is self-conscience about her unusual name. She grows to appreciate her uniqueness. I grew up reading it to my baby sister, then bought it for my niece who has an unusual name. If you like this book, you should also check out "Wemberly Worried" by the same author.

story doesnt flow well & no practical help for children being teased
I found this book ok, but the story doesn't flow very well & was disappointed that crysanthemum did not get to develop any of her own coping strategies: the bullying went away on it's own after the teacher showed her some support. Her parents were not much help either & I wonder if this might discourage children from thinking of their parents as an option to talk to. I think the message might be ok for very young children, but not much help for older ones in similar situations.

Great book to teach children about rights and respect
Great book to teach children about rights and respect. If you are teaching in the UK please be aware that this book has the word 'pish' inside it. I'm not sure about in England but in Scotland the word 'pish' is viewed as a swear word.
