Im a tall size 12, will a medium be ok or should I go for a large for a bit of extra length?

I’m a 10-12 and medium fits perfectly - it’s quite roomy

Is it knee length? I am 5’8” & don't want a short hip/thigh length coat.

Does the coat go in at the waist and have shape to it or is it straight up and down?

It has a draw string at the waist on the inside if you want to pull it in. It's a very flattering coat when all zipped up and you won't need to allow for bulky jumpers underneath. It's very warm.
