Using the optical audion connection i can hear regular tv but not my samsung hub apps like netflix? any suggestions?

We had the same issue using the digital connection from the Sennheiser base to the TV. For a quick solution I went to the Analog plug and was able to listen to both ROKU and TV Satellite. Next day, determined to be able to make it work (my TV: SONY BRAVIA, purchased in 2008), I swapped the HDMI cables thinking maybe it's the port and that the digital component will only work with HDMI-1. Well, I think the unplugging reloaded the HDMI ports and all is well. I can use the digital plug and hear devices from both ports. Lets hope it still works this evening.

Do you have to turn the headphone on manually like the old models(RS 170, RS 180)? Or does it turn itself on automatically when you pick it up from the charger?

I have both the RS170 and the RS175. The 170 requires you to press a switch on the base unit, and one on the earphone. The 175 requires only a switch (4 seconds) on the earphone. The earphone then turns on the base station. Much easier than the 170.

My samsung tv is connected to my denon receiver for my room sound. will the rs 175 connect without any problems?

Connect the 175s to the digital audio "out" optical or the audio "out" on your samsung tv that way you can still use your suround sound for other people at the same time you use the 175s. If other people don't want to listen you can turn your suround sound completly off and you can just listen through your 175s.

I have a newer samsung smarttv in our bdrm, what else if anything do i need to listen to tv w/o disturbing my sleeping wife?

The RS175 includes the optical cable that you will need. However, with my samsung tv it was necessary to go to the TV menu and change the sound setting - additional settings - audio format to "PCM". Then just use the switch on the back of the RS175 receiver to the "up" position when listening to the TV. You have the option of muting the TV or not. These are awesome headphones!
