I bought this as a Christmas gift for my child. After using it all this time, I can say it has held up much better than I expected. At this price range, it does everything I expected and hasn't just fallen apart.Pros:- Silver and Gold are very distinct colors. Other reviews mention they are not. Maybe the set has changed. But mine is just like the photo. Very Silver and very Gold in pretty much any light.- Magnets strength is sufficient for car use and uneven surfaces. Not super strong magnets, but I can hold the set upside down and the pieces stay in place. Sure, they will fall if I shake the board. But I wasn't expecting super magnets. This balance of magnet strength also feels nice when moving the pieces. If they were any stronger, you would be lifting the board and need to hold the board down. I find the magnet strength just right.Cons:- Cheap China product. Yet this is exactly how the price is kept low and that makes it a good value. The thin edge around the board will be prone to snap at the corners. This doesn't affect the playing area. I actually wish those corners were rounded. Only one corner has snapped so far.- Doesn't really stay closed reliably. So we store it in the box it came with. To avoid this, I recommend a simple rubber band. Problem solved. So not much of a con here either.Neutral:- Good portable size. But some people may find a 9.7" board on the small side.At the price, size, and features; this is a great set. Especially if you are not sure the recipient will even like Chess. If you love Chess and want to spend a lot more money, there are plenty of better sets. The value of this set worked perfectly for me and my kids.

My boyfriend and I like to play chess and we always worry about the board and pieces being too cheaply made and too small of a platform to use as well as simply losing the pieces, as we tend to do with many things in our home; we also have a kitten so she gets fresh and curious and will dismantle anything she finds to be important to us for attention or as something she thinks she can play with.Anyway, he was really excited when he opened it and we put it together to see how it would be in a playable setting. He expressed how much he thought it was so cool and simply loves the size as well as it being magnetic to cut down on the stress of losing the pieces as easily. The only thing we would suggest is something each player could magnetize the pieces to while playing in order to still keep all pieces together as each person gains chess board territory.

This product is 'what it says on the tin', a relatively compact travel chess set. Based on what I've seen available from Amazon, it has to be about the best currently available. That being said, I was looking for a specific board that my dad picked up probably thirty years ago and it had very minor features that this board didn't. Given that, I'd consider these few minor items what keep it from being a perfect 5-star review:- The magnetic action is relatively weak. I expected the pieces to stick to the board a little better.- The inner case is not large enough to accommodate the larger pieces standing up, so you need to make sure you knock them down whenever you're closing the case.- There is a stylistic edge around the board that, being plastic, doesn't exude quality and besides maybe allowing the board to be a little bit larger takes up more space than it is worth and makes the storage profile an irregular shape.

I really like this chess set for my needs. My friends and I were just learning to play chess and we wanted a low cost, portable, yet nice looking chess set and this set meets our needs. Be advised that this is not a "high quality" product. The pieces and board feel cheap, but it's perfect for those who are either just getting into the game or looking for a portable set to play on the road that still looks nice without spending too much money. The magnets seem to work very well; they are strong enough to hold the pieces onto the board, even while upside down, yet are still effortless to remove from the board while playing. Honestly, the pieces are so lightweight and easy to lift that I sometimes forget that they are magnetic. The board is also labeled with 1-8 and A-H which are visible from both sides. This is great for not only easily announcing your moves, but also for writing down each move in the event that you want to start getting into more advanced chess playing.Overall, I think that this chess set is perfect for new/intermediate players and I have been very happy with it. As I continue to get better at the game, I imagine that I will eventually want to upgrade to a nicer and higher quality board. However, for the time being, this is perfect!Note: If you are a serious/advanced chess player, you probably would not enjoy this board. Advanced players would probably want to invest in a higher end chess board.
