Lovely paintings
Sorolla is best known for his bright billowy seascapes but I was very pleased with these reproductions of gardens! The Alhambra, the Real Alcazar, and his own garden in Madrid.

Some of Sorolla’s best landscapes.
An excellent review of some of Sorolla’s best landscapes. Quality of reproductions is first class. I didn’t think the quality and weight of the paper used met otherwise exceptional standards.

Fantastic for any lover of Sorollo’s work
Am a great fan of Sorolla’s work and this well written book contains beautifully reproduced photographs of his art and an insight into the man himself.

Surprising break from society portraits
This book made me sad that I wasn't in Seville looking at the gardens or in Valencia looking at his paintings.

Terrible....
My first beef is with the quality of print: the reproductions are in matt, non glossy format that make vibrant oil paintings look more like watercolours. This all too common printing technique draws the very lifeblood out of oil painting. My second is with the actual content: the compositions themselves are for the most part badly conceived - almost crudely on occasion - and very poorly executed. Some seem little more than amateurish daubing. I actually don’t know whether to be amazed, shocked or disappointed that so many other reviewers consider this a 5 star publication. I guess they see it with different eyes.Based on last year’s quite stupendous exhibition at the NG I can only conclude that with a few notable exceptions (eg. the lovely rock/sea paintings of Javea and his portraits) Sorolla’s best work was of everyday scenes that necessarily included a human factor; all done under his magical rendition of flickering light and shadow.Nothing in this book reflects that. Thank goodness (again) for Amazon’s wonderful return policy.
