SKIL 7-Inch Wet Tile Saw - 3540-02

I bought this saw because it was the same price as renting, and therefore more convenient to own and have available when I needed it. I'm tiling a breezeway floor with 4x8 travertine stone, 3/8" thick.I have to say, I can't believe the things people are reporting who give it a 1-star rating. This saw works GREAT.For those who say the blade guard jams, it appears that they didn't read the instructions, which clearly tell how to adjust its height higher than your work piece, so that it glides under the guard without binding, while offering safety and shielding from splashing. To the person who said the mounting screw holes were too big and he had to use longer screws and nuts, he didn't know how to assemble the guard. You remove the screws, slide the bracket UNDER the table top and put the screws back in, as it's the bracket that has the screw threads. I think people who don't read directions or don't have the skills to use tools are panning a good product.Yes, the fence is cheap, but if you take care lining it up and tighten the hold-down screws securely, the fence is straight and works well.The water tray should be filled often, as the blade doesn't really pick up water if the tray is less than half full, and then the blade gets hot and cuts a lot slower. Add water to the tray about every 3-4 tiles and it's just fine. I've cut 20 tiles so far and had no issues at all. Doesn't chip or bog down, blade guard minimizes splashing on you. I braced the saw against the railing of my deck so that as I push the tile, I'm holding the saw in place against the railing, and it doesn't move. No chips, no failures. Very happy with this purchase.

This works great. The blade cover keeps the water spray to almost nothing. You can use this inside and not worry about the mess until you have to empty it. It empty easily into a bucket if it was not over filled. If you put too much water in it there will be a mess. Take it outside to clean it out after you empty it. It will be full of ceramic tile stuff and cleaning it in a sink is not advised.It cuts well with the included blade but go slow. Replacement blades might cut faster but the included blade worked well and lasted for my whole job.The blade cover completely hides the blade when it's running but there are markings on the table to help keep the alignment. The included guide works well but I found that using the table markings worked just as well.This is well worth the little extra money over the cheaper saws. Being able to use the saw close to your project is priceless.

When beginning a new tile job, you're probably deciding between renting and buying a tile saw, especially if you're already on Amazon looking at tile saws. Here are some simple questions you can ask yourself to decide.Is this your first time tiling?Buy the saw. It takes about 2 days to break even for this thing and it will be so much less stressful knowing that you don't have to rush and get it back to the store.Do you have more than 2 days of tiling to do?Buy the saw. It's cheaper to buy this little saw than to rent something that's most likely overkill for your project.Do you have a LOT of LARGE (greater than 12") cuts to make or very hard material?You may want to rent. The wet saws that are rented are much heavier duty and large than this one, and it can be cumbersome with large tiles. We successfully used it on 12" x 12" and 18" x 8" travertine tiles and that was pushing the limit of this saw's size capacity.---Regarding this specific saw:We used this saw for our first tiling job to reface our brick fireplace with travertine tiles that were 12" x 12" and 18" x 8". The saw had no problem cutting straight through the travertine, although we did have issues when trying to cut a miter. That might have just been our inexperience though.ProsCut through travertine with ease. We made dozens of cuts and its still running great on the same blade.The water shield does tend to prevent most of the water from getting on your shirt.Easy to store due to its small size and light weight.ConsThe fence is difficult to use. I'd recommend using a square to ensure it stays square.It's a bit small, which means you'll need to do math depending on the cut sizes you need. Be sure to account for the blade width.Finishing the cuts was hard, although this could just be me. Going slowly seemed to help a lot.The water reservoir is difficult to access. A funnel makes it much easier.Overall, this wet saw is probably perfectly adequate for most home tiling projects and pays for itself in about two days. If the fence was a bit easier to use, then it would be even better.
